Aluminum wiring
Comments (1)Many jurisdictions prohibit unqualified persons from doing electrical work in multifamily dwellings, so you might want to hire a licensed electrician. To answer your specific question you need to use receptacles labeled CO/ALR or pigtail with copper using a approved connecter (e.g., Ideal's #65 wire nut) and then you can use a "regular" receptacle. Make sure none of the aluminum wire's insulation had been damaged by heat and add the appropriate cable clamp to the box....See MoreReplacing aluminum wiring with copper without ripping drywall
Comments (14)there is absolutely a problem with aluminum wiring in smaller gauges for branch circuits like this, which is why it's no longer made and illegal to use. It's too soft and too difficult to get a good connection, which causes arcing and heating at termination points. In larger gauges it's fine because of the shear mass of it. Why do you think they only make aluminum wire is larger gauges? Take a single strand out of 4/0 wire and smash it down versus the entire thing. Is your life, or your families life worth the money you're going to save to try to cob together a fix? You'll never actually fix the issue unless it's replaced as you'll never be sure to get a secure and safe connection at the terminations. Pig tailing isn't a fail safe either. You can twist off the aluminum wire inside of those little special purple wire nuts. I've done it many times before I finally said I'll never take a job ever again that has aluminum wiring unless it's a total rewire This post was edited by hexus on Sun, Nov 24, 13 at 0:03...See MoreAluminum wiring concerns
Comments (8)CPSC has determined the Purple Wire nuts NOT ACCEPTABLE for permanent installation. It was pretty clear that in the first post he didn't have any practical experience than electrical worker would have. Many jurisdictions allow you to hack your own single family home wiring, but he said he was doing it for a relative. If he is an owner of the house (and it is a single family home), I'll retract the comments on it being illegal. However, given that he has properly determined that he has an aluminum branch circuit, my advice remains. He really has only TWO options. Pull new copper cabling to the relocated outlets -OR- bring in a professional that can do one of the listed copper to aluminum connections. Purple wire nuts neither I nor the CPSC recommends for this situation. Technically they are legal if you 100% make sure you follow the instructions in installing them. However, I'd not have them in my home or any home my friends or relatives lived in. As for the rest, I restricted my comments to the aluminum wiring because that's all he asked about. I assumed that his "basic understanding of wiring" knew that he couldn't leave inaccessible junctions and that he'd find out if the AHJ was going to require him to upgrade to AFCI....See MoreAluminum wiring
Comments (18)I appreciate everyone's comments. There was a lot of other factors that went into us deciding to walk away from this house deal. In the beginning the sellers wanted 229 and while we hesitant to offer that much due to comps not matching up, we were willing as long as it matched up with appraisal since my parents are buying with VA loan. Unfortunately it came back at 215, and after some back and forths with us losing all the extras we had asked for, 3% back, warranty, 1.5k repair costs if something came up in inspections... which is understandable since I'm sure they felt they were out 14k, we came to the agreement of buying at appraisal. Inspection came around and my realtor did warn me the ones we hired were really detail oriented, a lot of things popped up. Old house, again, we expected things to have to need some fixing. 9 pages of issues and the only thing we really cared about them taking care of was the one thing that would prevent us from being able to buy it, aluminum wiring that the insurances down here won't cover. We called 3 different agency reps who went thru all their contacts. We were told pretty much nobody would insure the house except 2 companies, one offered 1.9k/yr another 2.9k/y. But the wiring would have to be fixed BEFORE they would insure it...which in my mind means if we did purchase the house as is (which I don't know if it'd be possible since the loan requires insurance?) it wouldn't be insured until we fixed it, so if something happened between that time to the house.... well we just weren't willing to take the chance. But we found another cute lake house to view tomorrow, cross your fingers for us that it matches our needs :)...See Moreglennsparky
