try a graining tool. It's a hand tool with a rubber "mat" that when dragged across the stain creates wood grain. It's what the old craftsmen used to use to make cheap wood look wonderful.
It's not easy, from what I understand, but once you get the hang of it. If you can't find what I'm talking about, post again and I'll go on a search mission (love them!!!).

I would paint them the color of your dining room furniture.

I would paint the doors the wall color. That's what I do unless doors are real wood.

Thanks everyone! I was just watching a video on that graining tool... it's pretty cool. The only downside is the amount of time that would take to do it on the front and back of all of the doors.

I did bring that door back inside that I gave it one coat and held it next to the golden colored door. Surprisingly it looks much better than the other doors. It's still very streaky... some parts are very dark and others are light. I think tomorrow I'll give it a second coat to hide some of the lighter spots. Hopefully this will make it look much better. If it doesn't work out, do you think I could roll that stain on without wiping it off? Just to give it a solid red mahogany color?

I used General Finishes gel stain on those fake wood doors that were actually kind of like printed plastic. After the first coat i freaked out because it was all blotchy. After the second coat it looked way better, and after coat three it looked perfect.

I have never used the gel stain, but have read quite about it on various home decorating forums. From what I understand, it does take at least 3 coats. No, you are not going to get grain, but there are woods that don't have much grain. Your doors look like birch, even though you say they are not real wood. I would just keep reapplying the stain, making sure you allow sufficient dry time between coats. I think that is the key.

nosoccermom - I did my bathroom cabinets with General Finishes Gel Stain in Java color and I just finished my kitchen cabinets with Old Masters Gel Stain in Red Mahogany color. I also have most of my trim completed on the first floor with the same Old Masters Gel Stain. That stuff works wonders. Its by far the cheapest home improvement I've done that's had the largest impact on my design.

Back to the doors... I gave it a second coat yesterday. It definitely looks much better than the first. Still a little streaky in spots, but it won't be perfect since I'm staining such a large area.

I brought the door back inside yesterday after the second coat. All the doors in my house are in a darker hallway... except for that one door I posted a photo of above which leads to the basement. When I placed the stained door in this spot, you could definitely notice some streaks. However, I took that same door and placed it in the hallway and you can barely notice it thanks to the not so good lighting.

So I think this will work... I'll stain a couple more doors this weekend, hang them, and see what they look like. I'll post some photos when I get the door hung.
