Mirror Size for Large Sink

We could use some advice to help settle a "discussion" at home about what medicine cabinet we should put over a new sink.

We are looking at a full bathroom remodel and the current plan is to install a Kohler Escale pedestal sink. While the sink is approximately 40 inches wide, including the "wings" on it, the actual sink basin is only 22" wide.

One of us is advocating for a 24" wide medicine cabinet over the sink, with the thinking that something wider would overwhelm the space and take away from the lines of the sink. While the other is pushing for a 36" wide cabinet to provide a balance with the width of the sink.

Neither of us are good at visualizing what it would look like before it goes up on the wall and we're looking for input from more knowledgeable folks on what will end up looking better on the wall.

Should we go with the 24" wide, 36" wide, or some other width of medicine cabinet?

Try this. I think the larger size would be a better complement to the sink.

Bigger medicine cabinet might be better for holding meds and etc. but, the bigger the medicine cabinet, the bigger the door/mirror will be when you open it. You might have to step back away from the sink to get the door open. .To me, I would prefer the smaller medicine cabinet with light (sconces) on the side.

I think, screw that rule and get as wide a mirror as you are able. I'm planning to put a 48x30 mirror over my 56" vanity. So far I've found nothing already made that I like or in my budget. Went to my local glass shop and they will make a 1/4" thick mirror, 48x30, unfinished edges, no bevel for $90. To bevel all around (I forget how wide) it's $145 for the mirror. I bring in my own frame and they charge $20 to put the mirror in the frame. They said, the frame comes first. Makes sense. I can get whatever size frame I need via pictureframes.com for under $100.

At the suggestion of many at GW, I was considering getting a custom framed mirror. I would provide the frame and my local glass place would cut and fit a beveled mirror into the frame. The cost of a 48x30 1/4" mirror which included installing into a frame was in the region of $125, which I though was very reasonable. Unfortunately the frame I ordered online proved to be too disappointing to use so I ended up buying an already framed mirror. My point is that, unless you already have a magnificent mirror, it makes more sense to buy a new one than get an existing one modified.

I have a 8ft vanity in my hall bath. sorry I don’t have a better picture. My sinks are 15x20” in a 24“ sink base. The mirrors 24”x36”. They are Crate and Barrel‘s Colby. Mine are satin nickel but they come in chrome too. They were on sale over the 4th but they’re back to the regular price now. If you sign up for their emails they will give you a discount. My scones are Quoizel’s Kolt. They also come in nickel or polished chrome. I bought them locally but they are available on many lighting websites.

You can buy a mirrored medicine cabinet that has integrated LED lighting, which can also offer a nightlight with dinner function. So, you will not only have lighting from your main bathroom, but an additional light source. As for size, you can also get customized sizing where cabinets can be ganged together. Two 12 inch cabinets ganged together or two 15" ganged together would work where you can add lighting as an option and have interchangeable left or right open doors. It gives you alot of storage over your vanity without looking too wide. And if you want to spend the extra cost, you can have them recessed mounted as well. This will make them look flush with wall and less bulky over your smaller vanity. I hope this helps.

Thank you for the feedback! I should have added that we are looking at sconces on both sides of the medicine cabinet. We prefer the side lighting instead of the overhead or over cabinet lighting.

The 36" cabinet that is under consideration is a three-door model that there is possible concern about breaking up the visual space and flow of the sink. The 24" cabinet is bascially the same cabinet with sections on either side of the central door not included.

Because of the wall construction, the cabinet won't be recessed (it's a cement block wall) even after the remodel. It wasn't worth the effort, dust, and work to try to carve out a cavity in the cement block.

A single large mirror would work, but when you have a medicine cabinet that large, it gets separated into thirds, and that does NOT look good with it. I have to say that I'm not loving that medicine cabinet at all with that sleek modern sink either. It would need to be a whole lot more rustic looking, or a whole lot sleeker, with maybe a stainless frame.

Personally I think the larger mirror gives the illusion of the area being top heavy therefore I would go with the smaller medicine cabinet.

Thank you for the feedback! We've been struggling with the type and size of the medicine cabinet. We wanted something with some wood on it, but it seems like the cabinets we're finding with wood end up looking heavy and don't match well with the sink. I'm thinking that changing to something that has maybe a brushed nickle frame, to match the faucets, may make more sense?

I agree that the three-doors are just too heavy and doesn't fit well with the lines of the sink.

I agree that the wood framed medicine cabinets I've seen are not modern looking and wouldn't quite fit with your beautiful pedestal sink. I searched for some "modern medicine cabinets" and came up with some made by Kohler. I like the the frame-less ones the best for you.
