re-doing a bedroom - where would you start?

Hello,

We are re-doing a bedroom into a guest room. The carpet and furniture will stay (williamsburg blue carpet and white furniture) but everything else is up for grabs. The question is this....would you start first by selecting the bedding/comforter/curtains, or the wall color? I'm not a natural at this decorating, so I wonder if one is easier to select and then match the rest.

I'd like to really do something special in here since my husband thinks I always stick to "safe" colors and looks! But, I do have to keep the furniture and carpet as is, so that may be a challenge to work around!

I think that almost everyone here would say to start with the fabrics. Because paint can be tinted to any color and even matched to a fabric sample, it is much easier to get paint to go with a fabric than it is to find fabric to go with paint.

I think bedding or an inspiration accessory (even art) is a great jumping off point.

It seems a very tall space to use storage efficiently--you'd need a really tall ladder to access the space, no? And if I were the OP, I'd be terrified that my mom (if she were stubbornly independent) would try to get up there herself. It really is an awkward space. I have one, smaller tho, in the guestroom above the closet. I haven't put anything up there because as has already been mentioned, it gets dusty, and I don't want to have to routinely clean that area. I could picture a very horizontal art quilt hung from the ceiling and falling just to the top of the closet doors. With maybe some neutrals but a pop of red or orange or even purple or teal for some brightness (well, not the last 2 if she really wants sage green!). Maybe one of you knows someone who quilts and could put together something very simple (Amish patterns are usually very graphic and simple; also look at patterns at FunQuilts.com.).

I think the pine is warm and inviting and you could use a yellowed green to compliment it. There are so many beautiful greens and Palladium blue would look wonderful too. The wood would be the compliment to your warm golds so you can easily change the wall color to a different color and still have it blend with the house. Bring in the other wall colors in the comforter or throw pillows. I'd leave the wood alone.

I am glad I posted as I was for sure taking those blinds down but now I don't think I will. Have you ever seen the "decorative" drapes on the super short poles that go on either side of the window to "frame" it yet it is impossible to draw the drapes closed because they are all scrunched up to be about a foot long on a foot long decorative pole. I doubt I am explaining myself well but i was thinking in terms of this b/c I don't want to ever bother closing the drapes nor do I need to and nor do I want all that material. this kind of "frames" the window. I have seen it on HGTV but can't figure out how/where to buy this I will look into RH...Any other ideas or mind readers out there that know WHAT I am talking about? :)

My husband and I have a TV den upstairs next to our bedroom (designated a small bedroom), and it's great. I absolutely did not want a TV in the living room because it would be in the way, we don't do TV as a social activity, and it would be unsightly and anachronistic in our Victorian AF main floor. We also did not want a TV in the bedroom because we've just never been into that and it's terrible for sleep hygiene. My aunt and uncle had a bedroom TV for ages but ditched it when they moved to their new house. Having the TV den upstairs near our bedroom has been great - you can retire to upstairs and watch TV/play video games before bed but not IN bed. And we'll stick with one TV. There are enough old coax cables on our house to put a TV in every room (previous owner was obsessed with TV, I guess?) but I couldn't imagine. I don't even like TV that much.

Definitely the bedding because that is the most limiting factor. Think about how you want the room to feel when you are choosing the bedding - in otherwords, if you want a calm room, look for bed linens that are soothing and serene. Find something you love and everything else will flow easily from that.

Bedding is always harder to find--that, and the drapes or drapery fabric. Wall color can be coordinated to the background color or even to one of the other well-used colors in a comforter set.

So what did you find to use? How did it turn out?

When I'm doing bedrooms, I tend to choose drapes and match walls to them, because our bedrooms get used a lot and the bedding wears out and needs replacing, and I'm broke and tired and can't redecorate every time I need a new quilt. Not such a problem with a guest room though, although if you select distinctive adventurous bedding then the bedding becoming dated could eventually be. When I buy plain drapes with no pattern I also like the look of drapes and walls matching perfectly because it makes everything else in the room "pop" more.

So maybe if you find drapes and bedding at the same time... put one on hold maybe while you search for the other... then once you've got those picked out, choose paint colour to suit?

I also agree with all the folks above. I learned the hard way! It's easier to pick your bedding first, then find the color that you want from the colors in the bedding. Then pick your curtains. Finding the right color paint is easy after that. All you have to do is bring in a pillow, point to the color and they mix it.
