Window-film time, your tips/tricks to share?
Comments (21)Not film, but plastic, at least on the pantry window...after an attempt at the front parlor window. :( Bought plastic last fall, didn't notice until I went to cut some off that it was only 36" wide--unlike the rolls I bought there before! Anyway, it works on the normal windows, but this year I couldn't use the old plastic on the front, so I tried this new roll, and it wouldn't work to leave any overlap to allow taping on the sides; I had cut it to length, taped the top, and was trying the sides, but it was windy, so got the stapler to help and first one went in fine, but when I stretched the plastic to do the opposite side, it didn't quite reach, and the staple didn't come out, so I fired it at the far end of the porch to clear it, and stupid thing popped open, spewing staples all over the porch! Since the plastic was a tad too narrow, I took the piece down and used it on the pantry, where there was plenty of extra width! Got to buy a wider roll tomorrow, and look into the film to make interior storms--hope it's not too expensive, since I already have the wood. Projects are never as simple and easy as they seem with an old house, especially since technical devices seem to have it in for me like that guy on the old Twilight Zone episode! If I didn't use a manual razor, I'd fear one would come down the stairs trying to get me! :)...See MoreCLEAR window film vs. solar shades?
Comments (8)A lot of people in our town use a local window tinting business to tint their windows. I have never noticed a difference in the look of the windows inside the home, just less glare and a clearer view to the outside. There are several levels of film, just like sunglasses---some are almost like mirrors, some are barely tinted. From the outside, the more highly tinted windows have a reflective look to them, and some people use that on garage windows so people can't see in (at night with indoor lights on, they would be able to see). We recently had a devastating tornado in the area, and many people with the tinted windows still had to replace the windows, but the glass didn't break into tiny pieces and end up in their furniture. If you don't have a local supplier, Vista brand has a very good reputation. If you visit their website you may find a supplier in your area....See MoreWindow film on sconce glass?
Comments (6)Annie, that sounds scary, I wouldn't want to end up looking like Jack Nicholson. On the other hand, maybe it would ruin my utility sink, making a good excuse to remodel my laundry room? I'll go look at the kits and see if it's in my range of ability! Maddielee, I didn't think off that! My kitchen chandelier has a frosted hurricane, though you can't even see it inside the painted glass. My existing sconces have clear hurricanes, and it is such a Pain to change the bulbs with them, but that's a function of the whole sconce design, not just the hurricane. Comments (20)As I type, the installers are finishing up tinting 4 windows. I love the look of them. It is a bit like looking through lightly tinted Polaroid sunglasses. I asked them about placing it on the inside, which they did, and he told me that it was only dark tints that stood a chance of harming seals in windows. He said that it isn't uncommon for seals to eventually go in windows, and if they do they will replace the film at no cost. The product is 3M and their card says www.coolsunlight.com....... I got estimates from 2 places and found out something interesting. The first company gave me the estimate and added some $240 in taxes. The second told me that there is no tax on window film since it is energy saving and non-taxable! I know there are two, or more, levels of protection and one of them is "low E". If you use that one, you might be eligible for up to $500 rebate through your electric company. Time will tell how these work out but I hope what little I've learned is helpful....See Moreoberon476
