Liberty all wood windows will measure up to your expectations. We use them on all historical restorations.

Impossible to advise you without knowing the model and type of window you didn't like. Casement, double-hung? SDL or TDL? Jeld-Wen makes many kinds of all-wood windows at all different levels of quality.

Eagle and Marvin make handsome all-wood windows and will even put a clad sash in them. They will be more expensive than Jeld-Wen's lower quality all-wood windows.

We bought the basic all-wood window. No cladding of any sort, because that's what we wanted. Therefore, by default, got the lower end of the stick, apparently.

They're a mixture of DH (mostly), transom, and awning. This is the Caradco line, if that's of any usefulness.

I noticed that Pella's muntin has a doublsided face, unlike the JW. The contractor thinks the windows are ok and we'll make do until such time as we can afford better quality windows.

Michael, I checked into Kolbe, but those muntins are the same as JW's. I checked out the liberty link, but thing for ease of mind, I might just order what we already have and let the carpenter figure out how to make it better. The basic window (glass) is OK. It's the dets that I find lacking.

I would prefer Marvin, but I haven't been able to confirm that either Eagle or Marvin will build an all wood window w/out ANY cladding....

Marvin and Eagle both make all-wood windows without aluminum cladding.

Check out Sierra Pacific Windows. They have an unclad line.

I can also confirm that Marvin makes all wood windows - we bought 11 last spring. Check their ultimate double hung windows. You can also get the muntins customized just about any way you want them. They weren't cheap but at least we'll be getting energy credits when it comes time to visit the tax man.

Check Loewen, especially if you are doing a wood exterior...they use only Douglas fir, hold up much better as an exterior wood, close to the same properties of cedar red wood (not as good as those, but definatly better than pine)CHECK marvin and kobley. also have fir

I feel Jeld Wen custom is the best all wood window on the market. They use AuraLast wood it has a 20 year warranty on the wood against wood decay. Also being a highend trim guy the detail looks the best. Marvin would be #2 on my list but no warranty on their wood. Loewn and Eagle I would not consider High End. They are nice but the next level down.
Sierra Pacific is like Caradco.

Thanks so much for your reply. In the end, we went w/ the Jeld-Wen windows. They're ok, but seem a little thin on the trim end (but that could be me b/c I didn't order correctly). They're ok, seem like a decent window, but the screens are not very good. In fact, I'm sending back some of the screens b/c they won't fit if you don't have the brickmould option.

Also, I don't like the lifter thingy on the inside. I might end up putting on my own hardware so that we can lift the window more easily.

We bought a Kolbe b/c we wanted a square shape in a particular size that JW didn't sell. That comes should arrive in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know how the quality compares.

Jeld Wen has to use Auralast because pine is an inferior wood to fir ... when compairing hardness, density, hinge, nail , and screw retention, resistance to decay, warpage..
