Comments (37)I'd be interested if the quotes for the windows are from window dealers that are installing them. Those companies charge crazy prices for installation, and the homeowner has no clue as to the competency of the installation crew. IMO, the only way to go is to have a trusted finish carpenter measure and install windows and the contractor will be buying the windows from a builders supply company at a significant discount to what an average homeowner will pay for the same window. The most important aspect of the whole process is the quality of the installation. Lousy windows installed by a conscientious pro will last longer than top dollar windows installed by a schmuck. Any work done on a house that will come in contact with water had better done by the book or you'll be in a world of misery....See MoreCost of Marvin Ultimate vs. Marvin Integrity
Comments (8)windowshopper- I don't know if the dealers will compete. I have about the same number of windows as you, 3 of them are arched casements, plus 7 sets of French doors (5 of them are stationary). I was told that Integrity didn't make the arched windows I needed & I would need to go with Marvin Ultimate for those. I consulted with 4 different dealers-everyone had a different price and no one was willing to compete. One of them deals pretty much just with Marvin & he was the highest of the bunch! When I tried to negotiate and let him know he was significantly higher than other dealers and frankly he was even higher than the quote I got from Pella (which was through the roof), his response was he may not be the least expensive, but I was paying for quality. Quality? No matter where I get the Integrity, it's the same window quality, right? My framer is installing, so installation quality doesn't enter into it. Then he tried to talk me into all Marvin Ultimate because using Ultimate for the 3 arched windows & Integrity for everything else just wouldn't look right. When I let him know there was no way I could afford all Ultimate, he again went on and on about quality & making room for them in the budget. Obviously, he had an agenda & it didn't match mine. With that being said, one dealer is working with the area Integrity rep to see what they can do about getting a better deal especially on the French doors. They came in about double the cost of Jeld-Wen Siteline, M&W Mira & M&W Freedom 800, and just above the Pella Architect price. The windows were all less expensive than the Siteline, Mira, and Pella. We shall see what they come up with! But absolutely nothing wrong with shopping around--if you don't ask for a better deal, you can't expect them to voluntarily offer you one. Let me know how things go & if you find a dealer with rock bottom Integrity & Ultimate pricing!...See MoreThinking about installing Jeld-Wen Premium Vinyl Windows...
Comments (119)+1 @millworkman Most companies have no warranty on Sliding Glass Doors because of the manner of use and the fact that they often take flung rocks from lawnmowers which would not be the fault of the door. Many will have a 1 year glass warranty against breakage which would cover about 99% of the instances in which there might be an inclusion or stress crack that is on one of the cut edges. 10 year old, could be any number of things, but it's unlikely it was a defect that just manifested in this case. Like @millworkman , not a JW apologist, but I am not sure you would have gotten a different answer from ANY supplier in this case, let alone them....See MoreOpinions on Marvin Integrity (wood-ultrex) and Marvin Infinity
Comments (4)You are looking at three product materials with different pros and cons. I can say that each product that you've seen is highly regarded, but for very different reasons. You will want to assess your priorities for the project to determine which is the best fit. All are well made quality products. -Performance? -Appearance? -Cost? -Value (very different than cost)? -Warranty? -Longevity? -Option content? -Perception by others (including guests and/or future buyers of your home) If I could make a chart, the Okna would skew toward performance, value, cost, and warranty, the Ultimate toward appearance, perception, option content, and the Integrity/Infinity as somewhat of a bridge between the two. Not as good in the "good" areas of each choice, but not as bad in their weaker areas either. Whether that makes it a "glass half-empty" or "half-full" proposition depends on your perspective....See MoreRelated Professionals
