Comments (37)I'd be interested if the quotes for the windows are from window dealers that are installing them. Those companies charge crazy prices for installation, and the homeowner has no clue as to the competency of the installation crew. IMO, the only way to go is to have a trusted finish carpenter measure and install windows and the contractor will be buying the windows from a builders supply company at a significant discount to what an average homeowner will pay for the same window. The most important aspect of the whole process is the quality of the installation. Lousy windows installed by a conscientious pro will last longer than top dollar windows installed by a schmuck. Any work done on a house that will come in contact with water had better done by the book or you'll be in a world of misery....See MoreJeld-Wen Premium Vinyl vs Marvin Integrity Ultrex-Wood
Comments (19)I think your GC is a little off. We just did a high end house with Integrity/Wood. Unless they have changed recently, the Ultrex/Wood looks a lot nicer on the outside also. See the link below to our house. The Wood/Ultrex turned out really well. These pics are at the end of construction, they look even better now. I have had these for a little over a year now and am very pleased with them. Our builder leaned towards "cheaper" windows also (he preferred WIndsor). To me, Windows are one of the most important aspects of construction. You are talking $5k or so on an $800k house. Don't scrimp on windows, doors or plumbing fixtures. Comments (14)Vinyl certainly will come in at a better price point but may not meet the aesthtic that you are looking for. If that is the rationale for the move from vinyl, the question becomes is what is the other than vinyl look worth to you and how much of a premium can you stomach for it. The Marvin Integrity (wood - ultrex combo) is a nice looking combo and usually comes in that price range between nice wood and good vinyl. The wood interior is nice and it is a well regarded window by most who have used it. They did have some painting issues at one point, but that seems to be confined to a specific window of time. If you search for lkbum (poster on here), he had some wonderful pictures of an absolutely stunning waterfront build. I am still waiting to inspect the product when I go there this summer to vacation....ha!! I think you would be well served to look at that as well as maybe the Andersen 200 series to get a price comparison and see if you are willing to take the budget to that level. I agree with the past observations that the JeldWen is not preferable over those two options that I mentioned above. In vinyl, I would love to see something from Soft-Lite (Imperial LS), Sunrise, Okna, or Kensington Quantum 2. Those are all solidly built vinyl units that can be ordered in a new construction format. We provide a handful of custom builders around here with the Okna product from time to time for new builds or additions....See MoreJeld-wen, Andersen or Marvin windows?
Comments (15)We bought Anderson E series (aluminum outside, wood inside) french patio door last year. We installed ourselves with help from a friend. So far we are happy. It looks great. I researched forever before deciding on it ( I heard lots of good about Marvin too. I think they cost more). It is a hard decision. I would go with Anderson E series or comparable Marvin, (no Jenweld) if I was replacing more windows. But I don't want Vinyl inside....See MoreRelated Professionals
