Can I drill into a v-cut table leg?

I'm in the process of assembling my kitchen island and have very little experience with woodworking and need some help so I don't wreck my very expensive table legs.

I ordered two legs with v-cuts (basically 1/4 of the leg sawn out so it can accept the cabinet). I am using corner braces to attach the aprons and legs. In order to attach the legs I need to drill into that v-cut and then screw in 1/4" lag bolts.

The problem is that I am terrified that when I drill into the notch it will split the leg. Is this likely to happen or am I worrying for nothing? Have you had any experience working with v-cut or notched legs?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
