Ceiling fan light kit - problem

homebound

I'm a handyman that's baffled by a Casablanca ceiling fan with a bad light kit (perhaps a short). Customer was aiming the lights and they all went out, so I figured a wire got nicked somewhere in one of the lights. It's switched separately for light and fan at the wall.

Here's the strange thing (to me, at least). With wall light power ON , switching the light's pull chain switch shows either nothing on either side of the pull switch, and then after a pull, it shows power on only the side that's feeding the r lights. I'm using a touchless voltage tester. It does not show power ever on the line side of the pull switch, which is the one coming from the motor housing above.

Does this make any sense, and do you have an idea where the problem might be? Can the light kit be replaced to repair, or am I dealing with problem further up the line somewhere?

Thanks.
