Stepfather - Not fitting in- Too Much?

Hi all,

Background.. I'm in my 40's, never had any of my own children, had a few years experience with one child in a previous relationship. Was brought up in the old days, where you had respect for your elders, had chores, got your butt whipped if you didn't listen, didn't backtalk. Enjoy being by myself and responsible for myself.

I fell in love with a woman who had 4 children, 3 of them living with her and 1 with their father. I thought I could deal with it all and you get kind of blinded when you fall in love. It was pretty hard from the start for me, 2 kids were around 4 and 6 and 1 around 10. I tried to bond with them by reading and playing.

But here's always been the issue. They go to the fathers each weekend and there are no rules, no discipline. Fine, I cant' control that.. not good but I got no say.

Problem is, their mother is like that too. She used to have all 4 kids live with her. Oldest went to live with Dad, then next oldest went to live with Dad too. That one couldn't stand any rules at our place, so made it living hell until she got old enough to go live with Dad where there are no rules.

So before I came in the picture, mom was pretty lenient, if she made a rule, it could be broken all the time with no repercussions. She was very busy working and tired after coming home, cooking, cleaning and had 4 kids to deal with. So she just tried to get by, what better way to shut up a crying kid then to give them what they want. Therefore, crying was taught as a way to get what you want.

Enter I into the picture.. First off, I started bonding with the kids and tried try to fit into my new role as stepdad. My wife and I have completely 2 different ways to raise kids. I understand they are her kids and I cannot tell her how to raise her kids. I have discussed with her what my feelings are and offered suggestions.

But they are tried and then fall by the wayside. It's just not in her to followup on things. I've tried for 4 years to get the kids to wash off their plate after dinner, to get ready for school on their own, small things, like brush your teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast and have everything ready to walk out door. They will not do it. They just want to watch tv. I have suggested lists to check off and things taken away if they don't do them but that gets followed for a day or so.

They talk back all the time, they won't do anything their told to do without being told many times, when you talk to them, their not even listening, their interrupting with a differnt question, they don't listen in school, they won't do anything on their own. Mommy is always there to comfort them if they get punished for something.

I cannot live in a household where the kids run the house. My feeling is it's my place and they follow my rules. (I'm saying mine as in my wife and me)

The problem is the mom feels guilty for her divorce because the kids make her feel guilty, she feels guilty for 2 of her kids moving away to their dad's because it's a free for all out there, they do as the please. SO there is always a part of her that does not want the last 2 to not want to live with her, so she doesn't want to discipline them.

I'm just not sure I can deal with this any more. I have shut myself off from the kids, I think it is all too much for me. I'm kind of a loner and it's too late in life for me to change. I'm set in my ways. I'm not happy any more. I often wonder how I can possibly deal with all of these kids.. 1 that quit school and is on their own is already living with us. I know the next younger one will be doing that too.

Any suggsetions? Any thing to open my mind up?

Thanks,
