Comments (12)I wouldn't dismiss the well respected local "handyman". You'll most likjely get a better job from this guy than you will with a large window company. They might send a large crew of inexperienced laborers with one experienced guy overseeing the job. The larger company will most likely be significantly more expensive than the local guy too. Most experienced contractors would consider window installation as handyman work anyways. I can buy a nice window at the local lumber yard and you'll get all the benefits of the warranty. In my area you'll rarely see homeowners using "window specialists". They simply jack up the price of the window as well as the installation. They need to cover all their advertising, salesman's salaries, and executive bonuses somehow.... Don't get to hung up on the performance numbers. If you like the look of the Anderson or Marvin and you're saving a nice sum over the Sunrise, buy what you like. It's like comparing an ugly car that is more expensive over the car you like because the "better" car gets 27.8 mpg, while the one you want gets 27.7 mpg. I just looked up the Sunrise "authorised dealers/installers" in my area. Looks to me from their sites that they are nothing more than small "handyman contractors"....See MoreCasements: Andersen 400 vs Sunrise
Comments (36)DoorProz & Homesealed, I thank you both! I have not made up my mind yet but I did know before posting, that I was not going with American Jewel and that is why I emailed the installer/store back and told them to give me a quote for the Sunrise as I knew he was a sunrise dealer since his name and store was given to me last year from Sunrise.. Tomorrow night, I have a Okna approved dealer coming by whose name was given to me last year when I was going to get windows but decided to wait as they were so much money. I will share everything when I get my other quote and then I will make a decision. Anderson Renewal is not being considered and I do not want American Jewel windows despite the specs looking the same after doing reviews the other day. Thank you both and everyone on this forum that posted above for sharing what you know. Anyone else who wants to give input to this thread, that would be helpful. Homesealed, thank you for letting me know that the entry door and sliding doors is a good choice. :)...See MoreReplacements - Integrity or Infinity from Marvin, or Sunrise Vanguard
Comments (2)Thanks, HomeSealed, for the reply. I contacted the two companies that gave me full replacement pricing and they only want to do the job as full replacements. Basically, my pricing for 14 openings: 3 sliding glass doors (72x82), 7 gliders (3 - 72x 55; 4 - 72 x 55), 1 72x72 picture window, and 3 double hung (avg 30x50) is around $20- 21.5K. This includes installation, and new wood trim inside and out. I would have to stain the trim myself. Is this reasonable? Will the wood portion of the "wood-ultrex" hold up better over time than traditional wood windows (like my current ones?)....See MoreMarvin Integrity vs Sun Aluminum Clad vs Jeld Wen Premium Vinyl
Comments (14)We're in upstate SC as well. We looked at Windsor too - in our opinion Sun was a much better window overall. I don't have any photos - the top sash just slides down on some of the windows when unlocked. Here's a video from their website showing "sash droop" as he calls it, and how to adjust it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1t0zmrdlsk And speaking of videos, one of the reasons we chose Sun (not a major reason, but I still appreciate stuff like this) were the videos they posted on their website showing stuff like that above. Here's more. We just moved in the house in July, and it's so hot here - as you know - that the last thing we want to do is open a window. So we really haven't made a big deal out of it with our dealer yet. We had them come out once to adjust a few windows that had the top sash sag, but we've noticed more doing it since then, and not all of the ones I've adjusted myself will stay up like they should even after adjustment. I'll be getting in contact with our dealer in the next week or so to get those top sashes fixed as we'll be heading into open-window season soon. I have confidence they'll fix it - Sun was very good about fixing the minor issues we had right after installation. It was primarily minor finish/paint issues (we had them paint the interior at the factory) and out of 35 windows they replaced about 6 sashes. Two of them were because the dealer didn't spec tempered glass in the stairwell - they replaced those sashes with the right kind of glass for free. Good service....See MoreHomeSealed
