Vinyle Clad vs Aluminum Clad
Comments (1)If you are basing your selection criteria simply on vinyl versus aluminum, I would look for an extruded aluminum (both frame and sash) with an AAMA 2605 finish. However, there are many other features that will come into play besides this question but it is an important one. I would look at the brands that are mentioned prominently like Andersen, Marvin and Jeld Wen among others and choose one that fits your criteria (quality, rating, budget etc.. Comments (19)I think your GC is a little off. We just did a high end house with Integrity/Wood. Unless they have changed recently, the Ultrex/Wood looks a lot nicer on the outside also. See the link below to our house. The Wood/Ultrex turned out really well. These pics are at the end of construction, they look even better now. I have had these for a little over a year now and am very pleased with them. Our builder leaned towards "cheaper" windows also (he preferred WIndsor). To me, Windows are one of the most important aspects of construction. You are talking $5k or so on an $800k house. Don't scrimp on windows, doors or plumbing fixtures. Comments (5)Re: Painting aluminum, most reps I talked to say it voids the warranty, b/c you have to sand the aluminum to get the paint on, apparently and that interferes with the finish, so it voids the warranty on their finish, whatever that means. I have widened the possibilities to Eagle, Loewen, Pella's Architect and Marvin. Pella was too expensive for what I wanted. The rest were competitive in price, even though it had to be custom size for Eagle and standard for Marvin and Loewen. Pella had to be custom, so I am assuming that's why it was so expensive. Marvin also has a shorter lead time of 4-6 weeks vs Eagle and Loewen had to be 8-9 weeks. So, I am inclined to go with Marvin, but I haven't seen any of these windows in person yet, so I am worried about looking at just one and deciding. On the other hand, time is way past for ordering these windows. Never knew how stressful window picking would be! Pinar...See MoreAndersen E Series vs. Integrity by Marvin
Comments (15)We ended up going with the Integrity windows. I am happy with the look and quality of the windows (with the exception of the locking lever on casements, which has a cheap plastic cover rather than being solid metal). Two cautionary points: they delivered very late (like 50-75% longer than quoted) and I had to make some compromises to fit within Integrity's limited size options (had to use two awnings over a set of French doors because they couldn't make a single one wide enough). I suppose the late delivery could have also happened with the E-series, but my understanding is that the E-series has extensive size options. As for the durability I'll need to wait and see, but on balance I am happy with my choice....See Moredbrad
