Eagle v. Marvin?

I realize that there is a ton of information and opinions on both of these windows in other posts. But never a specific post re: comparing these 2 windows. We are looking at around 55 aluminum clad casements for our new home in Ohio. It is an arts and crafts/bungalow style that we feel the windows will make a big difference in the look and feel of our home. We are not looking for too many bells and whistles, simply wood screens and the potential to later place 9 light prarie style removable grills in the windows down the road, but for now, the windows will not have any grills or SDL/MDLs. The best quote we have received from a Marvin dealer and an Eagle dealer come to almost the exact price. We were ready to go with the Eagles, after receiving a great quote because up until that point, the Marvin quotes from lumberyards were 6000 - 8000 higher, without Low E II with argon. But a dealer came through with a quote, like i said, almost at the exact same price, so now we really have to decide.

Thoughts? overall quality of manufacture, warranty differences, customer service differences, look, insulation, thermal and other ratings, experiences?

Both units are good quality windows. I'd make sure the latest Marvin dealer is quoting the same options as the others that were more expensive.
The appearance of both is very similar, and since both companies use the same glass from the same glass company, their thermal properties and energy ratings are almost identical, as long as the same options are chosen.
Marvin may have an edge in warranty, as the old Eagle warranty was non-transferable. However, I have not checked the warranty since Eagle was purchased by Andersen last year. If they upgraded the warranty to Andersen's warranty, then Eagele's warranty is equal to Marvin's, if not a little stronger.
Both companies can provide the snap in grilles later. Marvin makes a wood framed screen. I haven't seen that option from Eagle yet.

thanks mike35. does your answer change, or does it favor the Eagles if the architect spec'd Eagles? I have been comparing the sizes and rough openings, etc., and while many of the Marvins are very close to being the same size, there are some spots where the windows would be a little smaller. we want as much light as possible.

I have been a high end builder on the north shores of Lake Erie for 39 years. I have installed most of the major brands at one time or another from Architects specifications. On the lakefront houses you are basically building a boat more than a house. We have been using Eagle clad casements for the last 6 years exclusively, and even through Hurricane Sandy, not a window leak. The extruded Aluminum that slides over the millwork is thick and did not dent during a hail storm four years ago. We did dozens of widow replacements on the north and west faces of houses with rollform cladding. After Sandy, there were trucks at every other house on the lake trying to repair window leaks. Some, of course were siding and flashing issues. Much of the problems are incorrect installation procedures. We use our own triple taping/flashing procedure that has worked great for us through high velocity horizontal rains. If my name in on the sign the windows will be Eagle casements. Beware of any brand double hungs in high wind areas. Also outswing doors are mandatory on the lakefront facings. Best wishes!

Usually I find it fairly easy to sort out the quality of the bidders. In this case they've all been in business for 10+ years (some for 30+) and describe the effort for the job fairly similarly. The only obvious differences is the one offering a 10 year warranty, and the formality of the bids, which varies as much as the prices, not does not align with the prices. I am planning to get additional quotes. Anyone have opinions on what's reasonable in the Boston area? thanks

Tempered/Safety glass requirement on a Double hung window. We have a couple windows less than 18" from the floor. However the way we are reading the code we woudl not need tempered glass. As we do not meet all 4 requirements under Section 7 or R308.4 ( The square footage of the individual pane is less than 9 sq ft) or are we reading this wrong. We have asked our Marvin dealer without any reply and have also reached out to our Architect as he did not denote the windows to require Tempered Glass Is each Sash is own individual pane or do both sash's get added together?

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks I just purchased SP for the front (historic view) of my home. Candidly - if they fail 5 years earlier on average, I make out significantly better from an expense standpoint. The first quote I had from Pella and Marvin crested $40K (not a lot from some perspective, enough to make me reconsider life) I shopped and researched and settled on SP - backed by a 20 year warranty for any wood rot on their clad window and backed by a very reputable and financially strong local dealer. I finally through caution to the wind and went with builder grade rear facing windows and could not be happier - they are architecturally consistent and backed by a so so warranty - at the price installed ($4000 for 11 windows) I am thrilled with the cost benefit ratio. The SP are significantly more - but by mixing the two brands I saved $30K and can do it all again in 15 years if need be. Good luck sounds like a fun project.

I'm in the same place. I've narrowed down my window choice to Marvin or Eagle. I'm still waiting for the formal Marvin quote, but the initial estimate from Marvin is actually a few dollars less than the Eagle quote. No one believes this could be an "apples to apples" comparison, as Marvin is expected to be more. One installer even suggested that the Marvin guy might be quoting Integrity windows. I'll know for sure fairly soon.

Eagle doesn't have a wood framed screen, but do have a wood veneer screen. It's an extra cost item. While it's better than metal, it doesn't look anywhere near as good as the Marvin wood screens.

Mike35 -- both companies use Cardinal glass, right? I know Eagle does, and it looks like Marvin does, but can't find anything that says so for sure. Thought a dealer once told me that Marvin used someone else's glass.

My answer would stay the same. Most architects specify what they know best, and trust. It's not always the best for you, however.
Marvin and Eagle both use Cardinal glass, as does Pella, Andersen and countless others. Each have their own specifications from Cardinal, so there will be subtle differences, but nothing too dramatic.
As for pricing, it really depends on the market. If both have a strong market presence, then pricing will be close. If one is not strong in a certain area, it may not price as well in comparison. Integrity isn't even close to these two windows. They're a lot cheaper, but a different look altogether.
I've seen both company's best up close, and both make a very high quality product. You'll be happy with either one, so long as the wood screens meet with your approval. I have not seen Eagles wood veneered screen yet, so I can't comment on it.
