Where does your work go?

What does everyone do with all the fantastic things they make? Can't keep them all! Give them to family, sure, but do they really like them or patiently nod their thanks to you> Do any of you sell them?

Just curious. This is a very productive bunch.

I like to donate to fundraising auctions. Last summer my daughters softball team held a yard sale and I didn't have much around so I took all the (embarrassing) items from my shelves of shame... damn things sold like hot cakes... leading me to question whether my taste just sucks! LOL

Congrats, NT, on selling what you don't feel comes up to your very high standards. We tend to do that w/our work - criticize it too much. Y'all know where mine goes - in the gardens cuz I got tired of making little dust catchers. My family (DD and DGD) requests so much, it's hard to keep up w/their requests and make the things I like for my gardens. Have given away to friends and sold far too many things that I wish I had back. Not selling anymore - selfish and want to keep them.

Saw your post and pics on the Decor forum and have to agree with others that the worst wear is from the weather. But, you also have a combination of mold, algae, old solid stain (or paint) on the surface and possible rot under the boards. As handymac mentioned, the joints and screw heads look suspicious. We always had a wood deck when we lived in Calif and even with our short rainy season we had to clean and restain at least every two years. Like yours, it would wear worst in the areas exposed to the sun and rain while the areas under the eaves looked untouched. I hated that deck as much as I loved it! Cedar is a very soft wood and I can understand your son not wanting you to use the pressure washer. Judging by the pics, it appears you already have raised grain in several areas. To get the deck nice again, I think you're going to need to sand the surface and then treat it with something that will strip everything that's left. After that it will need yearly treatments. If you go to all that trouble I'd suggest laying flagstone, precast concrete, etc. at the bottom of your steps and training the dogs to go there as long as possible. But my guess is that eventually, as the dogs age, they won't be able to use the steps and will probably start using the deck again. Our current home has a composite deck and I can't say enough good about it. No more chemicals and no more treatments! I know others recommended replacing your boards with a composite, but it's not that simple. Composite needs more support than wood so the structure underneath your deck will need some 'beefing up'. Unless all the work needed to restore your deck will be DIY, I suggest you calculate the costs of treatment, sanding, and continued costs of staining, then compare that to the cost of replacing the boards with composite. Before doing anything, I would have someone climb under the deck, if possible, and check for rot. If you have rot, nothing will adhere to the wood. BTW, I think rubber mats will just hold more moisture and cause things to rot faster.

Hi marksteelman, I don't have any suggestion to offer to deal with your problem, as I've never had a PayPal account - nor eBay, either. I think that your possibility of getting a reply to your question may be better if you start a thread of your own, so that people who may be interested in your topic may see it. Also, you may find a reply over in the "Computer" forum. Do you use an overhead hood, over the range microwave, or downdraft ventilation? Overhead hood What hood are you using? Wolf Pro Island Hood around 60 inches long. Captures effluent from 36-inch induction hob cooktop and nearby wok induction hob. What is the style - standard, chimney, canopy pro style or custom wood with insert? See Wolf literature Wall mount, under cabinet or Island mount? Island mount over peninsula What type of blower - internal, remote or inline? External Wolf supplied, Broan/Nutone manufactured. Works with variable control on hood. How many cfms? 1500 nominal at zero static pressure, but probably around a 1000 on max setting at -0.1 inches of house pressure with baffles in place, ducts, and silencer. House calibration has not yet begun. Ducted or Non-ducted? ducted How do the ducts go to the outside? Length, turns,size, thru attic, down into basement? Up a few feet to attic, ~80 degree bend to a Fantech silencer, then some more duct and another ~80 degrees to the roof. Length hasn't been measured, but might be around 20 feet. Do you find it too loud? No Do you have make-up air? A work in progress. MUA will have to dynamically compensate for this hood at any setting, a variable 1000 cfm nominal (probably up to 600 actual) vented filtered diffuser pair over the wall ovens, three bathroom fans, various states of window openings, fireplace, and furnace. If a renovation, then how hard was it to install ducts and how much did it cost? Too difficult to separate out from kitchen ceiling reconstruction, re-insulating the attic, etc. I may not want to know. If a new build then did builder charge you more to duct one way or another? N/A Most importantly, is it effective and work for your needs? Yes.

Wow! Thanks for the update. I was wondering. So the addition is really hap-pen-ing....I'm so excited for you!!! Ainelane asked me about the ledge. I use the basket like a drying rack for my knives, favorite coffee mug, etc... Oh and my wine glasses. :-) I use it for rinsing veggies too. Some people prefer to leave the basket out. Still plenty room for washing big pots and pans, so rarely do I need to remove it. It is nice to have that option though.

LOL, Id live surrounded by beauty too... if it were for my boring husband! lol truely I'm surprised at what he's tolerated so far!

I'm preparing to make a coffee table and while on the floor drawing out the cartoon, he came in and said "what are we going to do with that"... I said uhhh, we could offer it up for raffle to raise money for the 7th and 8th grade England trip. He was so excited, he printed a pic of the cartoon to propose the fundraiser to the teacher in charge.

I haven't even made the thing yet.

Gosh I am like the rest !! I sell a lot of it ,I give a way a lot .I also donate to fundraising auctions give it away , put it in my garden and house .I am now making bird bathes for my sisters.I have decided to give a cross or something of that sort to friends who love one have passed on with a poem on it .Last longer than flowers.

Would you believe I actually landscaped an area of my yard for the sole purpose that I needed a place to display my mosaics?

And now I've got so many projects for it lined up, I will be busy for years. If I could only get to them...Lately, my progress is slow because my spare time has been spent practicing Christmas carols. I'm working with a group of friends to put on performances at senior centers and rest homes in December. Wish me luck. I've never performed in "public" but it sounded like such a nice idea, I couldn't pass it up.

Me too! A lot is in my home, my kids homes and every now and then I sell a piece or get commissioned to do a piece.

I sold at craft fairs for a long time -- then made original creations to sell wholesale to a friend's store.
I've donated sooooo much ,too .... Probably a hundred pieces or more. I gave alot of gifts,too. Now I'm making things for myself . FINALLY ! LOL
