How to calculate space used by kitchen cabinets?

Chris Stromberger

I'm trying to lay out my kitchen, and things are squeezing into place, but before I get too far, I want to make sure I am doing it correctly. When you have a 27" oven, eg, do you measure 27" on your drawing, or do you have to allocate some space for the cabinet stiles? I think we will have 2" stiles, probably 3/4" width plywood cabinets, etc. So if I have a 27" oven cabinet next to my 36" cooktop cabinet, will that eat up 63" of available wall space, or will it eat more? Basically, I want to figure out what I can fit onto my 16.5' wall, as accurately as I can.

Thanks,

Chris
