I prefer a round in this space, personally. I like the idea of the light green.

I think the round table is cozy looking in that area. I like it. Not sure about the green, but I have such a hard time visualizing color. My first thought was keep it light with your black accented table and stained cabinets. Maybe a pretty light beige with gold tones to blend with the floor? You could always pick up color with accents. I think whatever color you choose it will have a whole fresh look, very different from the paper you removed. Good luck and keep us posted.

Actually, if you leave the window seat in, I prefer a rectangular table utilizing the window seat on one side and chairs on each end and the other side of the table. It's hard to gauge width, but it looks like you can seat two adults or three children in that window space. If you match the seat cushion with a valance, it could be quite attractive and useful. You could also have a bench type seat on the other side which would be nice if you have more children than adults in the household.

The round table doesn't appear to be functional in the space as it is now as it is over to one side of the room and would have to be centered on the window for the seat to be used. The room looks out of balance with that arrangement. I think that would be true even if you don't use the window seat, Whatever you put there needs to be centered no matter if it's round, square or rectangular or you would have to add something to help balance the room.

pris, I had a bench on the left wall in this pic but if I go with a rectangular table the bench may have to go. What you suggested is what i had in mind. Can someone post pics of a small dining room with a rectagular table. Thanks

BTW, I love the punched tin storage unit. I bet there is a story/history that goes with this piece.

artlover13060 the window seat is 64" long by 19" deep. The pie safe cabinet came from an antique store on a shopping trip one weekend. It was missing one of the punched tin doors on the front and the owner had put an old door on it. One day DH and I stopped at an antique store, something caught our eye out front, and we went in and there on the floor was a door that looked just like the one that was missing. We paid for it took and home and Dh shaved 1/4 inch off it and it fit perfect and was even really close to the same color and the same tin pattern. What are the odds!!!!

A round table is definitely a better option with all of the already hard, rectangular angles. I think a green would work, but stay fairly light because the room is a little dark. I'd stay along the same green as the undertones in your cabinet. Let that be your guide for finding a green.

Any color suggestions besides baby turtle? I am open to any color.

Hi - can you say more about your false bottom window seat? Does that mean it's part of the wall construction? or would you be able to remove it to use the whole wall as seating? You know that you could build a banquette out of cabinets, right? They do it out of over the refrigerator wall cabinets - it adds storage and seating. One of your pcitures has the drawer version. Just a thought.

I've included my favorite link of banquettes - even if you don't go with a banquette, it gives you some ideas of how a smaller eat-in space would look/work.

As for color - I'm thinking white. Trim and all. Choose one of those BM whites that they are always using over at the kitchen forum. Then you can use whatever colors you want to accessorize and put some additional punch into the space. Check out the one called "corner oddity transformed" in the gallery for what I'm seeing in your space - they have a similar tile. The wainscott might be a nice addition too. Or, "breakfast room color" that has the green wall you would like, but trim, furniture, etc., is all white.

The window seat looks quite a bit higher than your chairs -- even without a cushion. Have you tested to make sure the height will work for seating? Maybe just for kids?

mjlb Chair height is 17" window seat 19" without cushion, 24" with cushion. People have sat there for casual dining but you are right it is kinda high!!

We have a cherry bench in our kitchen, a bench that my brother made in HS woodshop 45 years ago. It is 19 inches tall, without a cushion. (A deliberate measurement variation, my bro says. . . ) Anyway, we keep the bench there because it is great for kids and works for adults in a pinch (without taking up a lot of space). If we had a wider eating area, I probably would send the bench back to dear bro, but it works o.k. I would never consider putting a cushion on it. Also, while I really like round tables, I found that an oval table works better (in my similar sized space). This lets me have two on either side, plus someone at the head and foot of the table. Given the width of the room, you'll want rounded ends (not a rectangle) to ease the way around.

Rdsso, I agree with Deltabreeze on the oval table. We have an oval table that has worked well in 9 different homes over the last 36 years. One house had a space similar to yours but with a sliding door where your window is and two doorways on the wall that leads to what I think is your laundry room. On the wall you have your beautiful pie safe on I had a china cabinet. Most of the time in that house I only had one leaf in for the five of us but we did sometimes use both leaves.

We used six chairs but four chairs with a bench would have been ideal.

Thanks for posting the picture of the dining area with the red and white chair covers - I now have another inspiration for my breakfast room.

I don't know what shade of green that baby turtle is but I will be looking for it tomorrow. I have 6 different sample cans of green for a small area in back of a my future hutch. I just can't find the right shade.

Whatever you choose will be beautiful. Remember, no one knows your space or what you like better than you!

mcraney, thanks for the words of encouragement, I am thinking if I don't do a banquette I want to have a bench. There is only DH and I most of the time, but we have grown married children with grandkids so it would be nice to have more than 4 people sit at the table.
