Very open floor plan - decorating with rugs questions

Hi Everyone...Not long ago I let my DH have the DR rug for his office since he needed to run cords across the room upstairs. So I don't have a DR rug , but a foyer (english manor collection by Karastan) rug & a FC looking rug for the LR. I don't want too much pattern since I have big silk checked gold & red drapes in the DR & the other two rugs are patterned. Is it ok to have a patterned rug in each area - lr, dr & foyer if nothing is seperating them but columns or should I maybe do a patterned rug in the DR & LR & get a less busy one for the foyer or just a small door rug. Or maybe a less busy one in the DR with maybe just a scroll border & open field. Would love to see pics if you have any for inspiration. What do you have going on in your homes with really open floor plans in the way of rugs.......Thanks alot for all your help in advance..........Bonnie

No help, but I am in a similar situation. I'm planning to go with a smaller rug for the foyer to put just in front of the door. I was thinking of working in a similar style and color scheme to connect the rooms together.

I've been buying my rugs over the last two years and I have ended up with different "types" of rugs, but with an overall color scheme that flows.

This is our dining room rug, which is off by its lonesome:

This is our livingroom rug:

and the rug for the neighboring entry hall (not ordered yet):

The entry hall opens into the family room too:

And the family room is next to the eating area, but the rug is not as vivid as it appears:

So, basically, they're all variations of medium blues, copper and browns.

OMG, thank you guys so much for taking the time to post pictures. It helps me SOOO SOO much. I want things to flow, but not be too matchy and it's hard! I LOVE both of your homes. You have done such a good job of pulling everything together. I have found quite a few nice Shaw rugs in the colors of my downstairs, so I think I will go that. Thanks again and I will be sure to post pics when it's all done!!

@Beth H et al.. yes, and I'm really thrilled with all of the recommendations, everyone has style and it's great to see varying opinions. So I don't want to think anyone has wasted their time, I think down the road in the near future, we will go with something built out pretty much like you were suggesting early on. As we just finished the remodel within the last year, we are not up for building anything out or even tiling the wall at this point. We don't need new furniture at the moment (kids will ruin it anyway). For now, we were looking for something minor / superficial, if that's the correct verbiage. While we know now, that it may not look "perfect", it's where we're at now. That said, we don't want to do anything (now) with the fireplace, what we are open to is: some type of shelving (which would have to be shallow in depth, I think), definitely plants (faux preferably), artwork or like I mentioned (which may have gotten lost), is maybe B&W canvas print collage (I'm a part-time photographer and we have zero photos of our kids displayed). We are also open to putting a small corner piece to the left side, but it would have to be very small footprint as we only have about 12" from the wall to the lightswitch near the slider, but after hearing/seeing some of the plant options, I think we prefer that. Another note, we (I) have a floor subwoofer to the right hand side, you can see my wife's aerogarden sitting on top of it until we find a home for it :) Hopefully, that helps, again, I really do appreciate everyone weighing in and taking a lot of time for the mock ups. -Matt

I ordered three karastan rugs. We haven't received them yet but realized after ordering that they are a bit thick and the front door will drag on them when opening and closing and likely cause more than normal wear on the rug. Meantime I found this at the local BBB and it's perfect. But lower quality - viscose. I'll be getting the first two karastans monday so will see how they look but I think the turquoise one is a winner. I guess it may not last very long. Wow! That living room rug is beautiful. The other rugs are beautiful too, and you have done an excellent job creating a good flow between all the rugs. The the living room rug really caught my eye because it appears to be an old rug -- I'm judging from the slight buckling on the edge seen on the edge of the rug closest to the viewer, which is the kind of uneven edge that's normal on an old rug. But I don't think I've ever seen an old rug in that mix of colors. Can you tell us anything about it?

Thank you Valinsv, Meg, & Judith for the advice! The rugs are gorgeous you posted Meg. Thanks for sharing. I am working with red & golds with alittle deeper tones of the FR. I am shopping around on Overstock.com & found some trellis & diamond designed ones that aren't too busy. Would love to see more inspiration pics if others want to chime in.........TIA! Bonnie

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

Judith: I've been told that it is a Tabriz from around the 1920s. Originally the rug was red, but the red now looks more like bronze probably from a chemical wash or some other kind of wash. I bought it in a rug store in LA.

One day I was looking at rugs on the internet and found this beauty. I thought it would look great in the entry hall next to the living room rug, but I didn't like how low the pile is:

I have an open floor plan from the LR to the DR. They are right across from each other and only separated by a walking path to the FR. I live in a 2300 sq. ft townhouse. I have wood floors going through 90% of my home.

I don't follow many rules of thumbs when decorating but for this one: with solid wood tables use a solid rug. With a glass table always use a patterned rug. You don't have to have a rug in every room.

Here is the reason: A glass table can be seen thru and you can actually view the beauty of a patterned rug at any angle. You can't do that with a wood table. Besides, wood tables give a warm feeling on their own.

My feelings for eating areas is to use no rug since crumbs (people have the tendency to step on them once they drop) and spills do happen. But that's me. Many on this forum would disagree.

Thanks Jerseygirl! That makes alot of sense. I don't have a coffee table in the LR yet....an ottoman tucked under a table against the wall in there but the DR table is large. I may have to go out of town this weekend & shop or order off the internet because we don't have any rug places here any longer. Thanks again for being so helpful!
