Question about rugs & an open floor plan?

We're getting ready to put down some of the novalis flooring and I am looking at a few area rugs to put down in my downstairs. All of the rooms are very open to one another, but I know having the same rug in every room would be super boring.

Is it okay to mix and match patterns as long as the colors flow well?? The one rug I already have in my family room is a ruby color with golds and greens and browns. I will be using the same colors in the other two rugs, but want to have a different print so it doesn't look to boring and matchy. Will it look too busy or is it really okay to mix patterns/colors with rugs?? Any photos you could share with me??

citymom, years ago when HGTV was really about homes & gardens, Lynette Jennings said to use different rugs in the same color family. I don't have pictures but I think you have the right idea.

I've used non-matching patterned rugs in the different rooms of our home. Our floor plan is very open and the rugs are visible from one room to the other.
I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Bonnie, I have an open floor plan from the LR to the DR. They are right across from each other and only separated by a walking path to the FR. I live in a 2300 sq. ft townhouse. I have wood floors going through 90% of my home. I don't follow many rules of thumbs when decorating but for this one: with solid wood tables use a solid rug. With a glass table always use a patterned rug. You don't have to have a rug in every room. Here is the reason: A glass table can be seen thru and you can actually view the beauty of a patterned rug at any angle. You can't do that with a wood table. Besides, wood tables give a warm feeling on their own. My feelings for eating areas is to use no rug since crumbs (people have the tendency to step on them once they drop) and spills do happen. But that's me. Many on this forum would disagree.

I ordered three karastan rugs. We haven't received them yet but realized after ordering that they are a bit thick and the front door will drag on them when opening and closing and likely cause more than normal wear on the rug. Meantime I found this at the local BBB and it's perfect. But lower quality - viscose. I'll be getting the first two karastans monday so will see how they look but I think the turquoise one is a winner. I guess it may not last very long. Are you seeking a monochromatic color scheme? For me, I much prefer a traditional Heriz, Serapi or Hamadan pattern with richer and more varied color to mix and match throughout the space. Gabbeh rugs also offer rich textures and patterns.

As you can see, these rugs are all different but they have the same colors in the patterns. I did deliberately choose a neutral rug for the breakfast area so that it acts as the central "hub" for the different rugs.

Big open floor plan here too with 4 rugs within view of each other. Two of them match (entry and kitchen nook) but the other two have similar colors and styles but not matching.

Great Room and in the distance is the dining room and front door.

OMG, thank you guys so much for taking the time to post pictures. It helps me SOOO SOO much. I want things to flow, but not be too matchy and it's hard! I LOVE both of your homes. You have done such a good job of pulling everything together.

I have found quite a few nice Shaw rugs in the colors of my downstairs, so I think I will go that. Thanks again and I will be sure to post pics when it's all done!!
