Troubleshoot a 3 way switch
Comments (36)I've been spending days trying to change the 3 way switch to 3 way smart switch. I've already identified the line in box A and the load in box B. attached it to the common terminals in each box. When putting back on the dumb switches, no problem. Works like it always has. When putting on the smart switches, the light stays on and there's no power coming from source/line to box A or any of the wires in box B either, obviously. light just stays on and the switches do nothing. The only thing i can think of is, in box A, can't figure out why the white wire, in the 3 wire bundle with the 2 travelers, was the load in box B, but in box A, it is twisted with all the neutral wires. Then also in box A, what i expect would be the neutral (the white wire that came in the bundle with the black line wire) is nutted together with the line in from a different bundle for a different switch in the same two gang wall box. I'm almost a 100% sure it was like this the whole time before I even messed with it (however I did have a neighbor try to help and he rearranged a few things that I thought completely reversed). Also keep in mind that when I wire it back up the the dumb switches, it works fine. Some one please help. Photos attached....See MoreWiring 4 wall lights w/2 3-way switches
Comments (1)The order that the electricity flows is switch, switch, lights. Multiple wires at some lights mean they are travelers from one switch to the other and do not get connected to all the others. A physical inspection by someone familiar with 3way switches would be in order. We have no way of telling from here which wires are incoming power, travelers or outgoing power. A wiring book will be helpful. If you study a few wiring setups it can be figured out what goes where....See More4 way switch question
Comments (5)1. The neutral (white) incoming power wire connects to the white wire from the light. 2. The hot (black) incoming power wire connects to the white wire that goes to the switches. 3. The black wire from the light connects to the COMMON screw on the switch. 4. The white wire, of the 3-wire cable to the switches, connects to the COMMON screw at the other 3-way switch. 5. The red and black wires, of the 3-wire cable, connect to the TRAVELER terminals on the switches....See MoreCeiling Fan with 4way and 3way Switches - Problems
Comments (13)Hi Greg, Could I bug you one more time? Old fan: 3 wires - black for fan motor, red for light, white neutral New fan: 2 wires: black for motor, white for neutral I've got three wires at the ceiling...black (always hot), red (controlled by switches), and white. If I hook up fan unit to black and white, switches are now wall ornaments. If I hook up to red and white, I can shut off power to the unit. So, I will be not using one wire at the box. Am I understanding this correctly? The documentation/manual with the fan assumes hot and neutral at the box. Thanks! :)...See Morebrusso
