door knob opening

I am replacing doorknobs in my house, but have discovered one door that is narrower than the others and the door knob hole is only about 17/8 inches as opposed to the regular 2/18 inches in diameter. Is there any way that I can make this opening larger so that I can put a new door knob on here.

You will need a hole saw of the proper size. First, use the hole saw to drill a hole in a piece of scrap plywood ( half inch should work ) next, clamp this over the opening in the door- making sure to line it up correctly. Now use the plywood to hold the hole saw while you drill the new hole. YOu may need to drill one side, then flip the door over and repeat from the other side. Make sense? Make sure the new hole is placed at the proper place for your new knob.

Go to a home improvement store---I get them at Home Depot---and get a kit. The kit contains both hole saws and the spacing jig. It costs about $20. Set the jig to the correct setback----that is the distance between the edge of the door and the center of the hole to be drilled. That measurement will be printed somewhere on the label of the new door knob.

Then drill out the hole---and check the dimension of the latch hole as it may also be too small---the jig has a place to redrill that hole as well as the necessary holesaw.

Knobs on the uppers-all doors, pulls on the lowers-mix of doors and drawers. Here's my reasoning: the pulls won't catch on my clothing or on the grandkids...and it's easier to put the child safety cabinet locks through the pulls. I don't know if either of those issues apply to you but our 5 visiting munchkins range in age from 12 months to 9 years so we needed to consider their safety in some of our decisions. I'm in the process of marking off the hole so DH and I can install the hardware tonight when he gets home...if I absolutely hate it I'll let you know. That's my 2-cents worth.

the problem is not wth the doorknob its the strike plate mounted on the door frame. For some reason the latchng mechanisim, the part that sticks out of the door is not going into the hole of the strke plate. Try loosening up the screws on the strikeplate and shift it a little bit and see if that solves the problem. Otherwise you mght have to remount the plate in a different position or file the hole bigger.

jaansu, maddiemom6 is correct. There should be an emergency release cord which detaches the door from the operator mechanism. With the door fully open, pull the cord straight down and release. If the cord is pulled to one side it may have locked in the open position. Next you can operate the door electrically to engage the door to the operator. There is usually a piece on the moving mechanism (Chain or screw) which has to reengage with the operator (Emergency release). Hope that helps, Dan Martyn

Use a Simple Guide to Enlarge a Lockset Hole
When I need to enlarge a hole in a door for a new lockset (say, from 21/8â³ to 23/8â³), I use a shop-made guide and a standard hole saw.
The guide is a scrap piece of Â½â³ plywood with a hole thatÂs sized to accommodate the lockset. Use the paper template that comes with the lockset to locate the hole in the guide (Guide Layout Detail).
After cutting the hole with a hole saw, align the guide on the door. (I attach scrap blocks to the guide to register it flush with the edge.) Now clamp the guide in place, and use the same hole saw to enlarge the opening in the door. The guide keeps the hole saw straight, ensuring an accurate cut.
