Do you want the door to be a focal point? By painting it black, that is what you will make it.

Given the size of the space and the present furnishings, etc. I would vote to paint it the color of the trim and beadboard.

If the door were flat, rather than paneled, I might think about painting it with chalkboard paint in black, and then adding interesting designs or messages, etc as an art piece.

Nice mock up hilltop. It looks better than I thought it would. But, I agree with les917, why would you wnt to make a door like this one a focal point.
Where does this door go? Would you want a more decorative door, like a french door for example? You could have frosted glass instead of clear.
But, my voe would be to paint it the same as the wainscotting.

If it's an interior door, I vote for a french door, painted to match the wainscot.

If it isn't, I do think black will look cold with your rather plummy red. Why not fling yourself out there and paint it, and its trim, the same red with a gloss finish?

Then you could hang a big mirror on the wall beside it to open the wall, and balance the shine with the shine of glass.

I don't think white trim will look right if you paint the door a color, however. Narrow trim doesn't work as well in high contrast to doors and windows as the more substantial kinds of millwork do.

I would like to see the door in the same fresh white as the wainscoting and the trim -- and then add a vibrant artwork on the wall over a long thin black-painted console table.

I vote for a glossy version of the red, too. I think that might be really interesting.

Black seems too stark there. I' prefer another color over black, if you don't want to do the red.

I'm horrible with who has done what - but who recently painted their doors black and it looked amazing? But, the situation was completely different. I agree that if you do it it makes the door the focal point. I would paint it the same as the trim or go with bronwynsmom's suggestion and paint it the red.

The door leads to the laundry/utility room. Immediately on the other side is the furnace. Boo. A nicer door could be an eventuality, but we were over budget on the project already, existing was a brown faux wood finish PLASTIC door. This door was on sale at Menards so we got it as a quick fix because that plastic door was just killing everything.

The dark walls kind of closed the space in considerably, something we were both happy with because the room gets tons of traffic so much of the space is unusable as far as adding furniture and room opens to ginormous family room with double french doors so tons of light coming in. A lot of the room just looked like odd open space and now its much more cozy. Thought a black door sucking light wouldn't be terrible. I liked the way the black chair backs contrasted with the wainscotting, that's where I got the idea that the door might look nice in that same finish but I think I've been outvoted!

I do like the fresh white with the linked fresh artwork... Would be a very different effect!

And thanks for the mock up - how cool is that? So easy for me to visualize, I need to learn how to do that so I can try out my crazy ideas :) Although it still looks appealing to me after seeing it.

I vote to make it the same as the trim and wainscoting...Use the wall space for addiing drama.

Well, like everyone says, "It's just paint," and it's not even a whole room. If you are still tempted because you like the way it looks in the mock-ups, paint it. If you hate it, repaint it the trim color. I think if you brought in some black with your wall art, it might look good black, since the chair backs are black.

I like the black door with the white trim. It definitely adds drama. If you do that you'll need to carry the black through elsewhere or the door will dominate. I would suggest a much bigger light fixture in black. It looks like your chairs are black already. Your style looks country-ish, so maybe you can add a tablecloth with a big black and white check. I'd also think about wall sconces, maybe black carriage lamp type sconces. To me, the red and black combination always reminds me of those old English hunting pictures, maybe because the horseback riders are wearing red coats. If you do like traditional country you could carry those kinds of colors throughout. Deep caramels, warm olive greens, etc. They all look good with red and black. by the way, I've seen lots of light fixtures with nice lines at my ReStore. You could get something like that cheap and just go over it with some of that nice hammered iron spray paint. You don't need to spend a bundle.

I see you just bought this new door, but here's a future idea.

As it's a utilitarian space, not somewhere you want guests going, the idea is to make the door disappear.

When people used to wallpaper they would cover right over such a door so it could not be seen.

But you can also disguise it like below:

Definitely paint it black. I painted all of my interior doors black over a year ago and LOVE THEM!!! And, black does not make the doors the focal point, quite the contrary- it makes them all disappear in to our home.

IMHO, there is something about the door placement and the big blocks of red and white already in the room that would make in unadvisable to paint the door black.
