I think those chairs are nice looking, & the price is user-friendly. It seems to me you wouldn't want everything to be the same color of wood, & these chairs are a way to get you started in a slightly different direction without blowing the kids' college fund. You could order just two & see how they look with your other furniture. If they don't work out, two would be easier to return.

Scotch guard and napkins do wonders for keeping chairs clean.
Go for the stuff you like....are you going to go forever not having nice things because your family doesn't know enough to put a napkin in their lap?
I think those chairs look a bit "make do" for what sounds like a lovely table.

Pretty chairs...is the table for the kitchen or dining room? i think they will work well for kitchen.

P.S. Most of us probabably have husbands who think we are a bit crazy, however, I think mine is crazy because if I ask him to hang a $19.99 clearance picture from Home Goods he buys $400 worth of tools!

I love those chairs...I love casual style.

I liked the chairs until I saw the front legs. Clunky, imo, and I am guessing the table is not.

What about doing leather chairs? Or chairs with washable slipcovers?

This was the original chair that I wanted for the table, although I do think they are pretty dark and am really liking the idea of the cream. My husband does not like any of the chairs probably because it means I am spending more money. We do need chairs though, I dragged the chairs in from the dining room for the time being which means the dining room table is bare.

Ah!!! I just bought those exact chairs from Kohls and have a coupon I can share if you need it. (plus you get the Kohl's cash rebate deal) They also have an easy to return policy that other sites who sold them didn't, that was huge for me. I'm picky, return if I don't like but we love them!!! Umm, they are not clunky at all if anything they are on a smaller scale, assembly was easy, we put 4 chairs together in about an hour. I do have to warn you though, the seat is as pictured and more of a dark walnut. I have Brazilian Walnut floors and they match the darkest colored plank in them. I think it would look pretty with the cherry though.

It's perfect for us because I just refinished the table top in walnut as well, (still have to paint bottom though). I didn't want a big chair and the scale was perfect for our smaller scaled dining area and they matched a hutch we bought perfectly. As you can see, the pictures online are a match to the real thing. I don't know how this would work in your space but can at least confirm they are a nice sturdy chair, considering the price, I was pleasantly surprised.

Lukkiirish, thanks so much for posting the pics. The table was finished by the previous owner in Mahogany, but is not super dark though it does have some darker areas. They look great in your house! Thanks for the offer of the coupon, I have one too! Definately one of the reasons to order from Kohls is the easy return if I don't love them in person. Beautiful table and chairs.

Thanks! Glad they helped. The table looks dark in the photo but when you look down at the top, the stain is on the lighter side and shows the wood grain. The table edges are dark though, same color as the chairs. Hard to say how it will look with the Mahogany but my first thought was it might offer a nice contrast. The box they come in isn't real heavy so returning is easy. We just got them last Friday and I was shocked at how flimsy they were packaged. Both boxes were open, one completely and it was miracle that parts weren't damaged or missing. If you go to Overstock.com they sell the same chair as the Mackenzie. There are a ton of reviews. Once the boxes arrived, it made perfect sense as to why several people had problems with damaged and missing parts.

@Calibean, The table is lovely, and I love the chairs, but the two just don't seem to go together. I do not have the best eye for design, but I would go for someting a bit more elegant, something along these lines (see link)

Hi, Calibean! Beautiful table! IMHO, I'm not seeing those chairs as being your best choice either. And the original ones you wanted with the nailhead trim would likely be a cleaning nightmare if your kids are as messy as you describe. I think if I were you, I'd keep a watch on CL for chairs where you might find a great deal. In this economy, I'm always a little reticent to advise someone to spend much money if DH doesn't agree. Sometimes they're truly worried about how to keep the family budget fiscally sound. So first of all make sure you're both on the same page there. Perhaps using the dining chairs even longterm isn't such a bad idea. Many homes now only have one eating area (at least out west where I live) even in the 2400 sf range. Perhaps we're more casual than other parts of the country. Good luck with your choice!

Sujafr, thanks for the tip on links. I probably overstated the mess of my family, really it is only my 8 year old who still occasionally spills drinks and for some reason has the ketchup explode quite frequently when eating. Perhaps he has a special talent. My husband will complain no matter the cost, but we are thankfully financially sound and chairs are not going to break us. He just likes to complain! I have looked on Craigslist, but am not liking the options and would like to have chairs by the end of August so am working against a time deadline. If anyone has any other good ideas, let me know. I do LOVE my table though, it was quite a CL find, I actually had two 60 inch round options to choose from!

I'm not wild about those chairs with the (lovely BTW) table. Does your husband think you don't need chairs for the table? Or does he think using the dining room chairs makes sense since you don't use the dining room? Men are like that. I think dark wood chairs or wood/leather would look best. If you feel the need to lighten it up add a fun centerpiece.

I hate to agree with Lindac (again. lol) but you really need to train those people you live with not to spill things. Then you won't need to buy/decorate around it. I grew up eating everyday meals on a Harden dining set that was my mother's pride and joy. Yes, occasionally a glass of milk was knocked over onto the table. It was cleaned up and no harm done. Make the spiller clean up the mess (your son is old enough to do that) and maybe they'll be more careful in the future. Unwanted advice done. ;-)

Calibean..good luck with the "training those people who live with you". I have three boys. They try hard and I make them clean up etc., but they are kids. They also need to be able to have friends over without mom nagging everyone or freaking out if someone gets cheetos on the chair seat, or sits on your chairs with a grass stain on their bottom. Your family should live in a confortable home not a museum. You will be happier with furnishings that are less fussy. You can have a beautiful home where form and function meet.

What about chairs like this for your table? The price is certainly right as I believe they are sold as a a pair. Or you might think about bentwood chairs with either cane or vinyl seats...something along the order of ice cream parlor chairs. My husband's grandmother had some of those around her round pedestal table similar to yours.

Thanks all for your comments. The debate about the ability to train my family will continue for quite a while I am sure. They do try hard and do clean up after themselves (and then I clean up after their cleaning up). Movinginva, my husband loves the chairs you picked out, so perhaps that it what we will end up with. I did order two of the cream ones just to see what they look like with the table. Proabably will not suit the table, but an easy return and at least I will know. I am sure I will post pics when I get them.

Calibean: My DH has 5 children, and she has cloth covered seats on a couple of her chairs (she mixes and matches chairs, looks great). She took the seats off and covered them with a clear vinyl. She gets the fabric she loves, and spills wipe right off.

Check out the chairs that I've posted below. The ones shown are two for the one price. Also look at the chairs adjacent to these. Easy to clean and not a big ticket item. Look at the price reduction from the original. I love the green ones on the right column.
