Need quick decision on slide-in gas range!

Thought I'd put this out there for some guidance. Sears is having a sale (ends Mon. and I have to choose between a Kenmore gas slide-in with a convection oven ( the salesman says its a steal at $1,275.), or a GE 30" slide-in ( model JGSP28SENSS) which is $1056. I like the looks of the GE better ( my husband thinks I am crazy, says they all look the same!) Do any of you have one or the other and is a convection oven really that wonderful?

Having convection in BOTH ovens was a number one "need" for me in choosing my double wall ovens. I know I want it, but I do a lot of baking. I've had a convection oven for 6 years and won't go back.

I was only considering Sears for the induction range. However every time I stopped in (over the course of about 6 months) there would be some "deal" or "error" that I could take advantage of, if I bought it right then.

Two different times when I stopped in at Sears, the range I was looking at was "mismarked" and the sticker was less than the computer said it should be for sale by a hundred $ or so. Salesman told me someone messed up, but if I bought it today - he'd honor the sticker price (but he was gonna hurry up and make sure it got corrected!).

I got so sick of the "salesman says it's a steal" deals Sears kept trying to use to get me to buy "right now".

We bought a Bosch free standing gas range about a years ago after having electric for over 20 years, and we love it. The convection oven beautifully browns roasts, and you can use the oven in the conventional setting as well. The gas broiler is terrific, much better than electric. Unlike the electric range, you keep the oven door closed when you broil, which is a big convenience. We do not make souffles and we rarely bake cakes or cookies, so I cannot say how it will perform for these things. But if you are used to an old gas range, you will be pleasantly surprised by the new ones because the ovens are electronically controlled and that keeps the temperature much more accurate than the older technology. Consumer Reports has compared electric and gas ovens and come to the conclusion that dual fuel is not worth the extra money.

laheen, If you have to break the bank on a range, I would NOT do it. If you say that you have to save couple years to make up for 4k difference in a range, then you really should not be looking at 8k to 10k (48 inch) range. That is ridiculous. That means you have to save 5 or more years for that range. Egad! Do not keep up with Internet Jones. Many have found themselves in deep trouble by doing that. I don't know you from adam, but you need to fund you retirement, kids' college tuition, adequate emergency fund before you can think about splurging on a 10k range. Just because other people are doing it is not a reason to do it. I know this is none of my business, but.... Sorry to be harsh.

Could you raise that run of countertop as suggested and put a thin cherry veneer trim or moulding along the front under the counter top. If the counter top overhangs a bit it is mostly in shadow anyways. Depending what your finished flooring is, could you not install it under the range? It does make it difficult to pull out when necessary but maybe you can come up with something creative for that. Lifting it just enough to slide something under it so it pulls out easily if you ever need to.

I think you should be practical and get the range that will fit your needs. Sorry, it's probably not the answer you are looking for. I wish I could help you decide between GE and Samsung but I don't have any experience with ranges in either of those brand. If you get the slide-in, you have to make sure your counters are the right height. Ideally, your counters should be 36 inches from the floor. The Samsung slide-in we looked at was just a bit over 36 inches tall and it was adjustable to a little over 37 inches. So when you slide in the range, it should sit right on top of the counters. Unfortunately, our counters are too low – only 35 ½ inches and the Samsung does not allow you to adjust downwards. This means we would have a half inch gap between the counter and the stove. So no slide-in ranges for us. :(

I think that extra deal might only be on Kenmore brands. Best to check with Sears though.
