Needing advice, daughter can't get alone with stepfather

Hello, I fortunately found this site while doing some searching and I think I'm glad I did. I finally have someone I can talk to that may understand.

I need advice. I hate the way my husband treats my 19 year old daughter. My daughter hates the way he treats her also. My husband feels I do not have enough rules in place for my daughter. All of this ends up in constant battles and I don't think I can handle anymore.

All the major problems between my daughter and her step father began a few years ago. My daughter had gone through a rough bout, hanging around with the wrong crowd, being disrespectful and irresponsible. At that time we had noticed stuff was missing from our house and we asked my daughter about it. She said she hadn't seen it. Well, my husband decided to set up a nanny cam in our house without telling me, and discovered that my daughter's friends were stealing from our house. The unfortunate side was that my daughter found the video recording equpiment before I did and all hell broke loose as you can imagine. Since then, the relationship has been horrible.

My daughter has now gotten herself on the right path and begins College in September to become a school teacher.

I am so proud of her. She's a good person and doesn't deserve to be treated the way she is.

Now, my husband is constantly complaining to me that my daughter isn't responsible. Just the other day, he woke me up telling me that she had left a light on and went to bed. I got angry because he woke me up over something so stupid that my response was not positive. My daughter overheard us and when I had asked her if she left the light on her response was not pleasant either. She got upset and told me she heard our whole conversation and she doesn't appreciate him making up stuff to cause problems. My husband and I had an argument because he wants me to hold her accountable. What exactly do I do to hold my 19 year old daughter accountable for leaving the light on? What is the big deal here. We all make mistakes and forget things.

He also goes in her room while she's sleeping to unplug her television after I've asked him 100 times to stay our of her room. She's 19 and deserves her privacy.

I agree with my daughter when she states he is looking for things to argue with her about. He's on her constantly. When her friends come over to watch movies, he makes them feel so uncomfortable. I hate that too. I don't like the way he treats my daughter at all, but when his son comes over he's a beautiful ball of fun with him.

I've tried talking to him several times about all of this. But it just ends up in arguements.

These kinds of situations are constantly happening. I'm sure to you, this sounds rediculous. It is rediculous, but I don't know how to stop it.

I am left in a position with my husband mad at me because I don't hold her accountable or put his rules in place. My daughter's mad at me becasue she doesn't understand how I can watch him treat her the way he does.

I'm in the middle and don't know what to do. Now my daughter's looking into getting her own place and getting OSAP for college to pay her own way just to get away from him. I don't want that, I would rather her stay home until she's done school.

In my opinion my husband is being unreasonable and I do feel he looks for stuff to complain about concerning my daughter. I know first hand that he is not a nice person around her friends. He makes them feel unwelcomed which makes everyone uncomfortable, including me. Heck, he even puts tape over the light switches so we don't use them.

I feel so confused.
