Have to bring electrical up to code

We have been informed by the utility company that we have to bring our electrical meter/wiring outside up to code. Does that usually mean we would have to do work inside the home, too? Our house was built in the 1920s and does have a fuse box. There is also a 220 box behind the dryer which runs the dryer and range. Someone mentioned that we might have to rewire the house, but I don't understand why. We do not have a problem with blowing fuses except maybe once during the summer when the air conditioners are running.
