Boston Sash?

Hi,

We're in Mass and are selecting windows for our new build. It's a colonial and we're looking at wood interior with 12 over 12 grille pattern and I tend to like the look of the 5/8" muntins verus the 3/4". So far, I'm finding we seem to have to go custom for the 5/8" muntins. Our Architect mentioned Boston Sash, which I have never seen in person so I was wondering if anyone on here has used them? If so, do you know how they compare to Marvin Ultimate, Andersen Woodwright, or Green Mountain in quality and price? If you're in Mass and know of a good place to view them, that's helpful too!

Are they not available with 5/8" grid? That is a relatively normal option and readily available.

I would stick with the bigger manufacturers in this case when it comes to wood.

I am big fan of going local, however, in this case...not so much.

Marvin and Kolbe & Kolbe make the two best wood windows in my opinion. I would stick with those two options.

If you just want a wood interior, you can consider fiberglass windows with wood interior like the Marvin Integrity and the Inline Eternity and avoid the potential rot issue in the future.

Apparently Marvin Ultimate does have 5/8" available as a custom order. I have yet to see a Kolbe & Kolbe window in person because the closest place is almost two hours away. Which also worries me because we're in an area where a lot of people do historic and traditional architecture so I can't figure out why no one has them. The two local dealers listed on their site told me they stopped selling them. I may just have to drive the two hours. The windows are a huge deal to me so I want to make sure we make the right decision. Thanks for your input!

@Ronnie Hossain Pella was sued and settled the case for Pella ProLine casement, awning, or transom window which were manufactured between January 1, 1991, and December 31, 2009 (“Pella ProLine Casement Window”) As @millworkman said, most issues people having is improper installation, and for every complaint, we address when it comes to newly installed windows or doors or anything else for that matter 90% of the issues are related to improper installation or flashing applications, etc. Not sure what happened in your case since you didn't say what issues you experienced yes some company representatives do try to point the arrows at the installers but most of the time they're right because not many follow the manufacturer's guidelines and not only when it comes to windows I see that with backer board installations, with composite decking installations, etc. That being said, I'm not defending Pella window manufacturer, I never used Pella and never suggested using them, just telling you based on my general experience... If you take the best product out there and you do not follow the manufacturer's minimum installation requirements there will be issues. Good luck

Try Boston Sash & Millwork in N. Dighton, MA (just east of Providence) they only sell retail through lumberyards and window supply companies but if you know a contractor or architect you can see them at Affordable Windows in Newton, MA. Boston Sash makes all wood true divided light single pane putty glazed windows with the balance system hidden in the edge of the sash for historic restoration. There is no sign that it is a modern window although it doesn't have the air inflitration rating of one. Single glazed with a storm window will meet MA replacement window code if you are duplicating an old muntin pattern. they will use any kind of wood, even owner supplied, and I've seen one with antique glass but I don't know who supplied the material. I don't recommend building one yourself but I have many details from that era if you really need them. Here is a link that might be useful: Boston Sash

Following... also looking at Essential line. We like the modern thinner look and the all fiberglass (rather than wood interior). Wondering if essential is a good product (heard some sales people telling us it was 'builder grade' as if that is some kind of lower quality thing?).

I'm now retired so you need to ask me questions while my memory is still intact. 18" cedar shingle perfections provide triple coverage and will last as long as you are likely to live in the house but they do require some maintenance if you want them to look like they did when installed. Most New Englanders don't care about that but, if you do, you should use an imitative material of which I only know what I have read. If synthetic cladding were avaialble without an embossed pattern I might have used it. The best person to talk to about windows is Joe Adams at JB Sash & Door in Chelsea, MA 617 884 8940. https://jbsash.com/commercial-windows-and-doors/ They sell Marvin and have recently dropped Andersen which, similar to Pella, hasn't kept up their customer service and technical improvements. I recommend Marvin's "Elevate" series fiberglass clad wood windows or their "Ultimate" series if your budget will allow it. I believe its possibile to order these windows with a different color sash and frame which can be a bit more elegant than all one color. I've not used fixed winows or casements except for a few basement emergency escape openings and windows in showers. Trim should be cellular PVC or a composite. Most windows need a sub sill to allow water to drip over the exterior cladding (Azek Historic Sill AZM 6930 or equal). Roofs need 5/8 or 3/4 sheathing and fullcoverage Ice & Water Shield underlayment. I recommend a sealed attic with spray foam against the roof sheathing and provision for future expansion into that space if appropriate. New Englanders are frugal with space and like attics and basements.. Foam the ceiling of a garage if the space above it will be habitable. At roof eaves trusses should have a "raised heel" and attic rafters should rest on a double plate on an attic floor; this raises the roof about a foot allowing for better insulation placement in the eaves and more exterior wall above the windows. Marvin offers the 5/8" SDL as a standard not a custom. Just want to clear that up.

Also, Boston Sash to me appears to be a local niche type custom millwork type shop and would probably end up being more expensive, now I am not saying they would not do beautiful work just that you sometimes pay more for that type of work. I would also tend to lean towards Kolbe or Marvin due to the size of the company and the amount of testing they do on a regular basis of their products. I personally agree with WOW and would recommend either of those two manufacturers. As far as a Kolbe dealer, call Kolbe or drop me an email and I may be able to find a dealer near you. I do not currently sell wood windows but still know plenty of people who do!

We are also in MA (20 mi outside of Boston) and went with Marvin's wood window with aluminum clad exterior. Check out the showroom at JB Window & Sash in Chelsea. They are great, that's where we got our windows & they were really easy to deal with. I was surprised that the Marvin windows weren't that much more than Andersen. And they have the 5/8" and 3/4" SDL options both on display.

Try to avoid looking at the Emtek doorknobs while you are there ... I did & fell so deeply in lust with them that I wound up buying them :)

BTW - we chose 6/1 with SDL in 5/8" and the thicker grilles would have looked ridiculous, so I understand why you like them so much.

We just went to JB Sash yesterday and I loved the Marvin Ultimates! I especially loved their casements, so cool how they open. It will be interesting to see how the quote comes in. I also loved the Emteks, but tried not to look for too long as I'm trying to make it through a week without finding some new, must have, upgrade ;)

We're on the N. Shore, it's always neat seeing local people on GW :)

Check their warranty. That's the part that would concern me the most.
