How to make a small house feel bigger?
Comments (22)I just want to add that this is a great thread full of lots of practical advice. My home is small, 1200 sq ft with the same # of rooms as yours. The room that feel the smallest (IE the Living ROOM) has too much furniture in it, the seating is overstuffed/oversized for the room, and it has clutter hanging around. My boys share a small bedroom (I think it's almost 10x10). We didn't get a bunk bed because they are crazy monkeys, they have matching twin captain's beds that take up almost the entire room. Furniture that has multiple functions (bed/storage) is so practical for a small house. When we moved in ~12 years ago, I didn't fully realize that most new furniture was scaled for the LARGE homes currently popular, hence how I ended up with living room furniture that is inappropriate for the size of the room. I don't have any unique advice to add except that, for me, it takes a lot of self-discipline not to let the day-to-day stuff pile up. And still sometimes it does and i just keep putting it into a big box until I can deal with it. I have made several pocket organizers that hang on the wall and I think they have helped a lot in terms of adding storage/organization without taking up space....See MoreMaking our house feel more open?
Comments (16)So I took y'all's advice and hired an interior designer. She solved most of my problems in less than 2 hours. 3 weeks later and in time for Christmas, my project is mostly done (just making plans for flooring and waiting for $ to replace and repaint cabinets)!! * I removed the huge pantry and made the opening twice the width I'd originally planned. * I removed all the paneling in the dining room (now it has orange peel texture like most of the rest of the house). I put up a small crown molding. * I closed off a small pass-through in the kitchen. I'll fill that space with full size cabinets. * I took the granite shelf from the original pass-through and moved it to the new opening. I put it at bar height and connected it to the peninsula bar. Almost immediately we started actually using the bar stools (a little more seating in the living room! Yay! * I took a 24" base cabinet from near the refrigerator and connected it to the peninsula. (The granite guys making the changes were surprisingly affordable!!). * I'll put a corner cabinet / pantry next to the refrigerator where the 24" base cabinet used to be. * Because I closed up the old pass-through, I now had room for a lot more storage in my sewing studio (on the other side of the wall). So the decluttering of that room is finally moving forward!* I removed the funky railing and built a pony wall. It gave me a few extra inches in the room, more outlets, and made everything look purposeful. If we ever sell the house, we'll probably call the space a "breakfast room." Even without the rest of the changes, all 4 spaces are used so much more and the place feels more open. Thanks everyone for helping me think outside of the box!...See MoreHelp us make this house feel like a home!
Comments (30)Perhaps you were being "tongue in cheek" with your original post about making a home. If your house is the place where you drop your belongings with no concern, sleep peacefully when you get into your bed and turn out the lights, lock the door to the outside world, and enjoy your dinner, then you have a home. No amount of home decor is going to change that. Sometimes when I am on an airplane it occurs to me that I am looking down on so many homes where the people who live there are living in their own little bubble of security and comfort in their homes. When you are in your home, it seems so encompassing and comfortable. But, when you view it from so far above, you see how very small and it is and how it is just a small drop in a sea of others just like it. but, there you are in your own little, tiny space of earth, your own tiny, tiny piece of the planet that you "own". How can such a tiny piece of the earth be filled with so much that concerns us? There are so many floors, pillows, landscaping, plumbing, rugs, kitchen cabinets, bathroom fixtures that demand our attention, yet it is such a tiny and insignificant speck of earth!!!! Sometimes I imagine what my neighborhood would look like if all of the walls and structures disappeared and all that was left was just the people, suspended right there where they are doing what ever they would be doing if the walls were still there. It is hard to imagine just how many people are surrounding you when they are all in their houses. Can you imagine the solid block of humanity that would reveal itself if it were in a large dense city? But, they are all behind walls...homes, offices, etc........ until it all disappears. At this moment I am sitting probably less than 30 feet away from my neighbors who are doing what ever it is that they are doing. They are so close, but we can't see each other., hear each other. We are each in our own little homes, with walls. Home gives us such peace and a somewhat delusional sense of safety. I love my home, no matter the decor. It is full of what gives me comfort and refuge. Losing ones home has got to be traumatizing. I feel deeply for those who have lost their homes out in California recently. My family members lost everything in Katrina. Treasure your home....and add some teal colored pillows, for sure! You are very fortunate to have a nice home to retreat to....enjoy! Maybe I will fly over your home someday....See MoreNeed help figuring out how to make my house feel less "busy"
Comments (23)I feel like lighting will make a HUGE difference. Usually when people say "busy" I imagine cluttered, but your decor looks intentional and your house looks lived in but not like a completely kitchy mess. I think it's just the light/contrast letting you down. So don't be so hard on yourself! I'm a photographer and the think that always stands out to me in houses that are really beautiful is how much light gives the spaces texture, definition, and brightness. Because you have darker floors and some darker pieces of furniture in some spaces they all kind of blend together and look really heavy even though they aren't packed too tightly. It's super easy to just plug whatever lamps you have into outlets and flip a light switch that turns on some lights on your ceiling and stop there, but I think the big difference between really put together living spaces and those that don't quite feel as polished is often the intentional use and choices of light. Layering lights at different levels, paying attention to task lighting, and being selective with fixtures can really make a huge difference. I've no where near perfected this in our house yet, but the few changes we've made in some rooms have really had a big impact. I think the right lighting in your home can do wonders and really help establish the ambiance you are going for....See Moregraywings123
