Fairness

As my fiance and I get closer to our wedding, I am really thinking hard about "step-parenting" and what it will mean to me. I do consider myself pretty much a stepmom already, since I have been around since STBSS was not even 2, and have lived with him since he was 4. I am very involved with his care when he is with us.

Nothing will really *change* with our marriage, but just the official title is hitting home to me and really making me think through everything extra carefully.

Do you make a conscious effort to treat your stepkids fairly?

As a kindergarten teacher, I try to take a lot of the classroom "policies" and apply them to our home life. But I sometimes notice that I go overboard, in weird ways, to make sure I am "fair" to STBSS. Every time I pass out a snack or hand a coat, or shoes to the kids, I make sure to give him his first. I consciously do that.

Then I think--would I do that if they were both my bio-kids? No, I'd hand out the snack first to different ones each time, and wouldn't think a thing of it.

I am always super careful to not praise my daughter too much in front of STBSS...or if I do, I make sure to follow it up with praise to him, as well.

And then I feel I am doing her a disservice...

But it all gets so frustrating because I know, having grown up in a nuclear familywith a younger brother, that fairness in the traditional sense is not always present. Sometimes one kid gets more, sometimes less, sometimes the parents have to focus more attention on one child than another, and vice versa. It all balances out in the end.

So how do you balance trying to keep things fair between bio and stepkids with trying to keep life normal, as well?

(not sure if this makes any sense! )

I just keep thinking of the phrase "fairness is not everyone getting the same but everyone getting what he/she needs."

I do think our situation is a little tougher, too, because our kids are 6 weeks apart in age! They are both 6--and the word FAIR is a word you hear a LOT from 6 year olds! I do think it will get easier as they get older...I hope???
