In search of Trestle Table Base (for my Walnut Top)

I have a gorgeous Walnut Table top that I am getting from a local lumber supplier to match the new walnut bar. Now I need a base for the top and can't seem to find one anywhere! I've searched and sleuthed on line and otherwise, but can't seem to track any down (other than restaurant/cafeteria types). I prefer a trestle wood base, but would be open to a rustic metal one as well.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

brickeyee - I know it would not be that hard to make, but I am not a woodworker & was hoping that someone on this forum could street me in a direction to surce it. Sorry, I should have been clearer....

Check out the Nichols and Stone website. http://www.nicholsandstone.com/item.php?ID=25 It's a 48" table that comes with 2, 15" leaves. You can pick from at least 8 different colors and either a distressed finish or not. You might have a problem getting the table and 4 chairs for under $2,000 though. How about your local furniture stores...I saw several sets that were inexpensive and very nice when I was looking (the Nichols and STone set is mine in a russet finish) my problem was that the wrought iron chairs were so heavy to move.

We did something like that 15 years ago. I wanted a specific size table and had trouble finding one with those dimensions. We had a cabinet maker make the table top out of the same cherry as our kitchen cabinets. We selected the style leg we wanted from a catalog and he put it all together and stained it to match. What a beautiful table! Love that site - will have to look for ideas for a round or oval table in my eat in kitchen. I like the black chairs in your space and painted chairs would look nice with the table, but since you have black counter chairs right behind the dining table it might be nice to use a different color. I think a wood chair would also look nice if the finish was more matte rather than shiny and polished. I have the RH salvaged wood trestle table in reclaimed pine and used Rachel Ashwell side chairs. I think they're a washed oak or ash and they have linen slips just on the seat. My slipcovered head and foot arm chairs were custom made at Calico Corners, but I've seen similar chairs at other places, like PB, Crate and Barrel and West Elm. The slips on all the chairs are really easy to wash and protect the upholstery underneath. I like the light contrast against the wood. On the refinishing- For getting off the finish - which is more likely to be varnish than poly - try Citristrip gel. My local Rockler guys recommended it and it was a piece of cake to take the finish off a 3 x 5 coffee table. Sooooo much easier than the stuff that I used years ago to strip miles of woodwork in a Victorian. And easier and cheaper than sanding. You'll be sanding plenty later with that orbital between coats. Here's my $15 Goodwill table, big, solid, heavy and nice shape and leg detail But the finish was really shot with both black and white water rings and gouges - the trifecta! I was able to bleach out the black rings and it came out really nice. Discovered there was a stunning swirling pattern in the fruitwood graining! Isn't she lovely? But...while it looks great, I've changed my mind on the look and shape I want. I've decided to go with a more rustic square pine table instead, so this one is going on CL or back to Goodwill. You can do it. Really. It just takes a little time and patience. You can always strip again - I think I stripped this piece three times because I was experimenting with stains and didn't like the colors. No biggy to redo it once you have it set up.

I have not looked for a trestle base, but Adams wood products might have one.

Any woodworker with a garage shop could fabricate one for you.

I live in Colorado. Have tried Craigslist, no help......Woodworker from a shop quoted me $600!!!!

I'm in a similar position, but I have a pedestal and need a round table top. I've been scouting craigslist for a pine or mahogany top to attach to my pedestal. I hope to find a pedestal table, discard the pedestal and attach the top to mine. I plan to paint the pedestal and stain the top, so I don't have to match the wood species. If you're looking for a walnut trestle, that would probably be too specific to find on craigslist.

This company in Maine makes a variety of trestles, but they're pretty pricey...

Given that $600 seems expensive to you, what is your budget for this like? Even though a trestle base is generally simple to build, it takes time. The maker has got to meet you, measure the top, work out a design, get you to agree on that design (possibly requiring changes to that design), buy the lumber, do a bunch of different machining operations, maybe a little hand work on the joinery, sand/scrape everything smooth, glue up some assemblies, apply finish, deliver and install the top. The materials are not free, and the labor won't happen in an afternoon.

Walnut is expensive wood, especially in thicker pieces and high grades for furniture.

Large furniture factories use lower grade wood (more defects) then cut out defects and glue up to create wide pieces to keep costs down.

A Hinckel-Harris cherry table might have the entire top made from pieces less than 3 inches wide.

When done well you really have to look to find the grain mismatches from the narrow pieces.
