Good chairs to go with a trestle table?

We are having a trestle table made for us in a light colored pecan wood. It will be similar to this table only in a lighter color:

We are trying to figure out what chairs we can buy to pair with it. What is a good style for this table? We don't want metal chairs (too cold), fabric (too difficult to keep clean with children), or wicker (food getting stuck in the weave). We currently have black accents in our open layout house (and black bar stools at our island). Would it be best to go with black painted chairs again? Something else?

Here is a picture of our current table (too small) in our space. It's a mess, because it was right after we first moved in:

What a beautiful table! Love that site - will have to look for ideas for a round or oval table in my eat in kitchen.

I like the black chairs in your space and painted chairs would look nice with the table, but since you have black counter chairs right behind the dining table it might be nice to use a different color.

I think a wood chair would also look nice if the finish was more matte rather than shiny and polished. I have the RH salvaged wood trestle table in reclaimed pine and used Rachel Ashwell side chairs. I think they're a washed oak or ash and they have linen slips just on the seat. My slipcovered head and foot arm chairs were custom made at Calico Corners, but I've seen similar chairs at other places, like PB, Crate and Barrel and West Elm.

The slips on all the chairs are really easy to wash and protect the upholstery underneath. I like the light contrast against the wood.

Omigosh, keep your chairs! They'll be beautiful with that trestle table. They're a classic design that's not going to be out of style, probably ever.

I am not familiar with tung oil at all. Our chairs are RH natural and we left as is…they have darkened since purchase and are not as dark as table. I tried to do a quick search for the techniques and did not find the one i had previously seen. I am pretty sure it was on pinterest. A few of the techniques were a bit too labor intensive for me. The legs have a lot of detail Love your chairs! Your set looks beautiful.

Restaurant chairs, school chairs, and library chairs are the absolute best chairs. They're solid, well made, and very sturdy and comfortable. You'd really have to put a pic up of them, though, for anyone here to give you a solid opinion.

Thanks outsideplaying...I had mentioned a bench to DH before, but he was not for it. We already have the chairs...leftover from the new house...and we are mostly adults who prefer the flexibility of the separate chairs and the back support. Bassett makes nice furniture...we just ordered the sofa for the library from there. denali, thank you for asking! I just did a google search on trestle tables and came across the image. Never occurred to me to look further than that until you asked. Turns out these guys are custom furniture makers in VT and designed the tables themselves. They do great work and I will definitely follow up with them....I'm already imagining a nice vacation trip to VT to bring up the wood and hike around the mountains! update - I bought the CL hutch, but decided to use it in my foyer. Across from the hutch, I have my antique Irish pine baking table w/a scalloped apron, which better complements the CL hutch than my current one. Also, the CL hutch is huge, and I think its mass will work better in my foyer, which has 13 ft ceilings. Definitely need to paint it, and I'm thinking Farrow and Ball off black. I'm not sure if I'm going to stain the backboards a darker color or paint them black. I really need to figure out what to put on the shelves though, and was thinking maybe some ironstone pitchers, which I like to collect. I was hoping to display my green milk glass cake platters and bowls, but I don't think that will work in the foyer. The hutch I now have in my foyer (shown in the photo w/chairs) will be in my dining room for now. It's much less narrow, so won't overlap much, if at all, with the table. It doesn't have a buffet surface but does seem to work well with the chairs, and I can display ironstone on the shelves. jane - I ended up going with the Hubbardton Forge 8-arm oval chandelier in dark smoke finish and with the stone (opaque) glass. I have the clear glass in the HF chandy in my foyer and think it might make this fixture more "country" than the stone, but was afraid the light might be too harsh over a dining table. Also, I'd like to display ironstone in my hutch, and thought the stone glass would complement that. jamaraz - I think you could definitely make this table work with more formal chairs, and believe the website actually shows it paired with either the camelback or similar chairs. Your chandy sounds lovely. I was so wanting a french wire birdcage type chandy, but DH preferred the forged iron one we ended up deciding on. It does work better with other furnishings and lighting in our house.

My husband built a trestle table and we just put Chocolate faux leather parson chairs with it on one side and he built a storage bench that we painted to match the wall because we needed the table to be closer to the wall.

Our table is Espresso(dark chocolate) satin painted base and the top is stained with Espresso. (Brown black)

Do you have to have those bar chairs/stools? I would keep the chairs that you have now and get the table. I think I would go with a saddle seat at the bar. Aside from that, put a bench on that side of the table, so the backs of the chairs will not fight with the bar chairs and put the chairs you have now on the ends and side next to the sofa. Or, you could get new bar stools/chairs, use the chairs you have now on the sides and get upholstered or slip covered wing chairs for the heads of the table.
