We've had it go off because of moisture in the button. Did you replace that with the doorbell?

If it is woking fine when he arrives then he is not going to be able to find a problem. All he could do is replace parts on a hunch and see if it recurs.

Yes hendricus, we replaced the doorbell 2, 3 times,,thinking that might be it, no affect.

I think I would go to Home Depot and purchase a wireless doorbell. If it goes off then you know you have someone playing games. Disconnect the hardwired of course.

Replace the switches, not the doorbell. If you go wireless and abandon the db make sure you disconnect it and the transformer. If there is an issue with the wiring you could have a fire potential, even if it is "low voltage."

pjb,, by switches, you mean the chimes and/or transformer?? what switch? Not that it matters if I know or not, because I want an electrician to try to cure it,, if at all possible. I understand if its in the wire somewhere within a covered wall,,, we cant do anything about it,,, but if part of the wires are visible,, like for instance where it goes from the chimes to maybe the panel or transformer, maybe they can test it to see if the problem lies somewhere around there??

A door bell circuit is very basic. If the bell is working then the transformer is working and the circuit is complete. The part in the circuit to complete or open the circuit is the switch. If there is a short anywhere, it would be at the switch since that's where the circuit would have to complete itself. Do as hendicus and pjb999 suggest and replace the switch and that would fix the problem. Otherwise I think don 1 hit the nail on the head and something or someone is pushing the button.

Ok, I did replace the switch,,, I call it doorbell,,,actually 2 times I believe....And nobody else in the hood is pushing it,,,or playing games,,,,

I agree it's probably a nail or screw through the wire. Are there any picture frames or similar mounted neat or below the door chime itself (the box that makes the noise) - If you can picture it, locate the transformer and the chime box, between them a probably brown coated wire will run, we call it LVT. In a rancher it may run up in the attic or down through the walls depending on distance.

If there's access a new wire may be able to be run, although the wires to the door switches/buttons/thingys you press will probably be inaccessible, so you may have to consider that wireless unit.

Make sure you don't have more than one button, here in Canada it's common to have a second button at your back door, the way ours is wired, front door goes "ding dong" back door just goes "dong" - my dog hasn't quite figured this out, if I hit the back door button, even in sight of her, she goes running to the front door to see who's there. If it's multiple presses, she's even more excited because that usually means it's my niece, whom she adores.
