i think your color scheme is nice! i don't think the color scheme is the problem. i think you're missing some interest on the walls - pictures, mirrors, art... anything really!

and i think you're bordering on too much of a good thing. you've got all similar textures and all solid colors except the rug. maybe a patterned pillow or two? and add something with a metal finish. maybe a silver tone floor lamp? the white will help liven it up too.

I think a throw in a deeper color on the sofa and/or a few patterned darker pillows on the aqua chairs and a lighter colored pillow on the brown chair would even the weight of the color and add more visual interest.

I agree that pictures will make a huge difference. I really like the aqua/brown/cream color scheme and the rug really pulls it together.

ok, don't everyone critique the choices... i just slapped whatever i could quickly find to demonstrate how different the room will look once you get everything in there.

also, even keeping a solid aqua pillow but swapping it out for one with a different texture than the upholstery makes a big difference.

I like your colors, too, and agree with the others. I would, however, center the couch and coffee table on the rug, move the brown chair so it is more perpendicular to the couch, and pull the two cute side chairs up closer (maybe even with front legs on rug).

Maybe, if there is room, you could pull the rug a little bit forward toward where you took the picture and that would let you move the couch out enough to put a narrow table behind it. Then, when you accessorize the table, you can introduce flowers or something for more color. That said, I love (LOVE) it the way it is now, color-wise. I just think placement needs a little tweaking, but feel free to ignore me totally since that is not what you asked. I just suspect that it is the placement of furniture more than the color that is a little (a very little!) off.

Your in-laws will love it! Maybe they will even offer to help you find a sofa table and treat you to it! ;)

I think it's really pretty and love the statement that it's just missing the jewelry. I'd look for some things multicolored (pillow, throw, art) that breaks out of the current scheme to include another color in small doses, like coral, or red, so it's not too matchy. I'd look for some small bolster pillows for the blue chairs instead of the bigger square ones - they look too big for the scale of the chairs. You could even make your own with scarves or table runners...some great fabric you don't have to sew, and wrap it around some fiberfill if you can't find forms and just tie off the ends like a tootsie roll. (Is that an outdated description that young folks won't know)?

I agree with maggiepie, it needs some accessories to pull it all together but I love the colors and think with a few finishing touches it will be terrific. I like the idea of some pillows or a throw in a pattern/texture in your colors.

I absolutely agree with the general statements. Your room is looking very nice and your furniture choices and colors are lovely. However, right now the room looks a little sparse because the only pattern is the rug and most of the furniture appears to have the same texture. Additionally, the placement of the furniture in relation to the rug is a little uneven. I would agree that the sofa and coffee table should be centered on the rug. The chairs could hopefully be pulled forward to have at least the front feet on the rug. (I'd probably try to get both brown and blue chairs partially on the rug, evenly spaced.) The blue chairs don't have to be pushed back into the nook, but could come forward some.

I love maggiepie's mockup. I think the patterned and textured pillows really help. As does having something decorative (like a tray) on the coffee table. I would suggest stopping by some nearby home decor stores (Target, BB&B, Home Goods, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, etc) to see if you can find any patterned pillows that you like, or some accessories like floor lamp(s), table decor, etc. I personally would not rush to buy furniture like side tables or book cases unless you already had one in mind. If you don't have the time, just get things centered on the rug and you're really almost there. Your colors already look great together.

Wow, thank you all so much! This has been a big help. I love the mock up from maggiepie and I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. I think I will just adjust the positioning of the rug before my in laws get here. Then I will focus on adding the accessories later and do something like what maggiepie's mock up is showing. Maggiepie, where did you find those pillows? I'm not sure I will use those exact ones but I am curious where you found them.

I think personal accessories such as family pictures are what's missing. While you can shop til you drop or until the cows come home, your home will look as though you've been on a shopping spree if you don't put a little ((heart)) in it. Even old black/white pictures of family are better than nothing at all. A grouping of grandparents/parents/your wedding pictures makes a nice collage. Oh, friends are good too. ;o)
