Wireless Light Switch

The lighting in our closests consist of light bulbs in ceramic bases which are operated by a pull chain. This looks pretty tacky.

I would like to replace these pull chain fixtures with nice ceiling mounted light fixtures. Are there any products available that could be mounted in or onto the box in the ceiling that would allow wireless control of a ceiling mounted light fixture? I have seen various wireless products that plug into a receptacle and allow control of that receptacle by a wireless switch, but these don't seem to do what I need.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Here is one that is designed for the type of socket you now have. Maybe you could use this and find a fixture that could be adapted to use the existing socket.

If this does not work, and if you can't find something else wireless, putting in regular switches would not be too hard, and it might make for a more permanent and durable installation.

Thanks for the tips ky114.

I will look into the possibilities of using the wireless socket and also consider hard wiring.

We just (well- back in August) replaced our counter tops and shopped for UCL for months - trying to decided how and what to install. we are now in the process of installing the UCL and we're using LED. They are strung together and are dimmable. We have an OTR microwave with a cabinet above it where there is a outlet (recepticle?) anyhow, we have inline switches that turn them off and/or dim them. All plugged into the one outlet. Very nice. They were somewhat costly, but cheap to operate. Roughly 14 feet of lighting will be like 35-40 watts. AND being LED they should last 10+ years. The reviews on Amazon don't give me that warm fuzzy feeling. :) There's only 6 reviews and half of them are bad. That is, if you read the actual review. There are a couple of 4 stars that don't sound like they should be 4 stars if you read the comment. Now that it actually exists, I wonder how many people are willing to spend 30 bucks plus shipping for it. As a side note, this thread seems like one that lots of people feel the need to sign up for a Houzz account, make one comment on this thread pointing everyone at SwitchFlip and then not participating in any other discussions. Is it possible that these people have an ulterior motive in promoting this product? :)

Hi, I put in some LED strip UCL from a kit that I saw and bought at my local ACE Hardware. It was ~$40 for three strips of "warm white" LEDs. it has a thumbwheel off/on --not dimmable-- and the transformer is on the plug into the wall. If you want dimmable or to have a regular light switch (and you don't have electrical experience), then this is *not* the kit for you. The link below to Amazon looks like the same product that I bought from ACE, though the Amazon is named AmerTac and the ACE was named Amerelle. I liked buying at the local store so I could make sure it all worked and the LED light colors all matched or I could take it back easily. (This ACE is in a town of ~5k so I'm sure an actual city would have even more choices!) I have only one upper cabinet for which I wanted UCL so this kit has worked very well for me and I don't care about dimming in my non-open galley kitchen. Some future project will have DH drill a hole in the cabinet to route the plug into the extra outlet by the hood and re-do the wiring to a switch rather than the thumbwheel but that takes the electrical experience he has, not me! I used one of these so I could turn on my garage lights from the house. I used a wall-mount kit that surface mounted the remote switch at the house end so that it looks like a standard wall switch. https://www.casetawireless.com/ The other "half" of the system replaced the existing wired wall switch. IIRC I picked it up at Home Depot Bruce

Do you have attic access above? Because it's trivially easy to run an actual switch if you do.

I do, but I have about 20" of blown in cellulose insulation that I would have to walk across to get to the areas and then move aside to do the wiring. It is possible, but I would prefer a reliable, less messy way.

There are a number of solutions available. I have a wireless ceiling fan controller that would work...but have all the fan controls which you wouldn't have. Homer's, Lowes, Ace, has them. Then there's X10. I'm sure you will come up with a good solution that fits.

Another suggestion would be motion sensing light fixtures.

I had not thougt of a motion sensing fixture. That is a good suggestion and I will seriously consider that.

I know the best solution would be to hard wire a switch through the attic and down in the wall, but another idea that has occured to me is Wiremold. The run on the ceilings would be less than 2'. Then the Wiremold would run down along the door frame and then over a few inches to the switch. Other than the ceiling most of it would not be visible looking into the closets.

Any thought on this?
