Comments (36)I don't get this house. Besides all that has been mentioned above...The front door (the main door to the house) dumps you (and visitors) into the dining room. If that were a formal dining room, seldom used, it would be odd and awkward, but it is the ONLY dining area in the house. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, kids studying, dropping book bags, school projects--all as the first thing everyone sees when they walk in. There's no place there that can stay a bit messy (like a breakfast nook). As I look at other spaces and see huge usability and interoperability issues, I think that this is, once again, a house that no one has given thought to how people live. The rooms exist like pieces in a Tetris game, not as a unified whole. Who puts a toilet next to a bed head? Who gives prime exterior wall space to a closet? Who puts the tub and the crapper in the same room ("Sorry, honey, I'm in the tub. Use another toilet.")? Why split that room into two that way? Who designs a media room with no closable door (and a bedroom right above, with no closet)? The only--only--thing that makes sense is the location of the powder room--away from the beaten path yet handy and discreet. But with a pointless pocket door. There are so many violations of Architecture 101, it amazes me....See MoreTree problem and is there a way to do this without creating eyesores?
Comments (18)Gardengal, you need some new glasses. Your picture looking and word reading are sub-optimal. I only accused the first Stewartia of being planted too high. It is unusual, but it can be done to the detriment of the tree. Put it in a shallow hole and throw some mulch on top. It is easy as can be. No one will ever notice. People expect their trees to have mulch volcanoes. It is really easy to do on a slope where half to three quarters of the downhill side of a root ball can be left exposed if not planted correctly. That does not make tree walls the best solution to the problem either. Seven year old twine? That is some of the most rigid looking seven year old twine I have ever seen. What is it made of? Hemp? If the twine looks like that after seven years, I'd sure like to know what the burlap around the root ball it should have been holding together still looks like. They did not bother to remove the twine? What else is in there. Twine!!!!! Kim it wouldn't hurt to get a second onsite opinion from a skilled plant person. I'm sticking with my failure to establish from poor planting diagnosis. I still want to know what in the heck is going on with the Dogwood. Can you take a closeup of that at soil level?...See MoreI need help with curb appeal, without breaking the bank!
Comments (7)I think the gable is the right size and looks fine. If you need a new roof, I hope you do a green standing seam one again - or red. I think it gives the house a presence. It looks like the house could use a washing. Then paint it with a good quality white exterior paint. I would do the trim in a hunter green to work with the roof. Paint the trim of the windows green, too. I would paint the gable a medium gray. Paint the front door a brighter yellow. Then add a garden at the foundation on the left side of the house. Leave the porch open. I would use colorful pottery near the front door with colorful annuals. Or paint the gable green like the roof....See Morehow to raise floor without losing sliding glass door
Comments (11)Thank you! I don‘t want to make it harder for you, but your walnut trim is wayyy prettier than our janky rough-sawn cedar was—in fact, we ripped a lot of it down and replaced it. I think lighter floors (just not gray) would look good either way. I like your big rustic support post by the steps. You can see the accent shelf we built—it hides two support beams that were previously part of a pony wall. I think a straight up bookshelf would be really pretty in your room; I can see you have some lovely ceramics to display. However, if I had toddlers I’d worry about climbing. My youngest is 7 and the knicknacks are now safe (although I did yell at my teen for tossing a football there just today)....See Morelkbum_gw
