Because of the shape of the high sides and all, I would guess that it might be some kind of a decanter tray.....but that's just a guess. I was going to suggest that you ask in Antiques&Collectibles, but you say this isn't an antique? It sure looks like one. Cool tray!!

With the high sides, rectangular shape and little feet, it looks to me like a buffet server piece, without the glass insert. A quick google of "silverplate buffet server" or "buffet tray" turns up some similar pieces.

I was first inclined to call it a gallery tray, although I could not find one with high sides like this one. It's a wonderful piece; I'm sure someone is going to set us straight on this.

I wish I could call it "mine", lol.............

Thank you guys! I cannot find anything close to the tray I showed - so far. I did post on the antiques forum as I think this is probably a reproduction. I was thinking decanter tray - not sure if that is a correct name, but to hold the crystal decanters.

lkplatow - it DOES resemble some of the buffet servers, although I cannot find any that have a bottom - they all have the inserts.

I believe they are called "gallery trays." I've seen them in local antique stores with sterling silver dealers for much more than $400.

That's what I said above, gallery trays but when I googled to find pictures,
I only saw pictures of lower galleries, such as commonly seen, which makes me think there might be another name.

Gallery tray! Thanks guys! A gal on the antique board posted an ebay link. $36 at this time. I'll keep an eye out till I find just the right one.

As I posted above, the pic I showed is NOT an antique. I did see a few antique ones on-line and believe I can find one for a good bit less than $400. Plus I can buy a Godinger (I think that's the name) new one for around $150 - which would be good quality.

Those probably aren't the kind of antique stores I find the good deals in Allison. LOL

The places I've seen locally are antique/vintage and sterling silver. Hence, the price difference. My mom has one, but not as larger as the one you linked in your OP.

What are you going to do with it?

If you're not in a hurry, keep your eyes open at Goodwill online. I've picked up some great things including this tray which was all of $4. It's not a fine piece by any stretch but I loved the look.

Thanks Allison! I hope that didn't come across snippy. What I meant was some of the best deals I find in antique shops are those little hole in the wall - stuff piled high and under stuff, etc. You can get some good deals. Not the upscale places. I do love vintage silver and of course you can find some pricey stuff. I also find a good bit on ebay (people sometimes really don't know what they have!) and etsy (vintage). I appreciate you keeping a lookout. I'm fine with silver plated, vintage/antique would be great if I can find it for a good deal, but a new piece would be fine also.

dlm200 - I'm not in a hurry, that's part of the fun - the search, finding just the right thing. That tray is GORGEOUS! $4????!!!!!

Allison I forgot to answer your question - I would use the tray as shown in the pic I posted - on a side table, perhaps a chest I have in my dining room, something like that.

allison did you think I meant it cost $400.00?? Just to clarify, it was $4.00 - the shipping was $10.00!! I honestly have no clue what it is, there are no markings on it - it sort of looks like hotel silver, DH thinks it's nickel plate over brass.

I answered your post on this in the Antiques forum, but I dont know if you saw it. I live in the Houston area too, and was recently at Star Furniture. I saw a tray like yours but in an antique brass finish. They have it in many different settings...buffet, on a bed...it really caught my eye. I went to the new Star on 45, just north of 1960. They have beautiful accessories! Hope you find it.
