Does anyone know (ballpark!) what a walnut c-top would cost?

I just got my marble/granite quote back for our new build...but I left my island top off the quote as the stone place doesn't do wood. Anyway, I am calling this place tomorrow to see what the approximate cost of a 4.5' x 8' island top in walnut would be, but I don't want to be crushed if it is insanely more expensive than my marble. Anyone care to share the cost of your top? :) I am just hoping I can get the total within my allowance! Even if yours is a different size, I could at least get a ballpark. Thanks!!!

I got bids ranging for $41 - $150 a square foot 1 1/2 inch thick wlanut). Decided to go with a local lumber yard (cheapest) and their work is gorgeous.

That is a big range!!! I am hoping to get it under $100 a square foot. Cross your fingers for me!!

personally, I would disagree with Steve_a on doing the demo yourself. He's right that you can, because it takes little skill and basically brute strength. But it's dirty, it's very heavy stuff (old tile, mudset, cast iron, etc., heavier if your bathroom is old). You're likely to have a problem disposing of the material, since a lot of cities refuse to pick up construction debris. When I demo'd a basement closet that was just old plaster and only about 15 sq. ft. of wall, I probably had to use 10-15 trash bags alone, because each bag can hold only about as much debris as a 5-gallon bucket (or less) before the plastic rips. Demo is, overall, cheap. You don't need skilled labor to do it, so contractors can get people cheap for doing it. Unlike plumbing and electric, and even tile. Also, contractors will have the appropriate tools to do things like break tile -- not just a sledgehammer, but a jack-hammer like implement. Do you want to rent one of those? And they can do it quickly. Assuming you actually need the use of the bathroom, the faster the better. They can do the demo in a day or two, whereas you might need a couple of weekends or more to do it. (or multiply both those numbers by 3-5 if you want). Finally, at least for me, and I'm a bit of a DIY guy, things like demo are the least interesting part of the job. I'm proud of building things because I can look at the end result and smile. Not so much with demo. Of course, you may feel differently, but those are some considerations why I don't think the couple of thousand $$ you'll save doing the demo yourself are worth it.

Thanks for the excellent info. Yes our climate is temperate enough that A/C is really a luxury that we'd only use part of the year, but we do like to sleep cool and my husband is working from home more these days so we would enjoy keeping the house a bit cooler. We currently have a portable A/C in the office that does keep that room and most of the upstairs cool, but it's pretty loud (too loud to use in the bedroom at night) and ugly looking, too taking up part of our sliding glass door. We have installed a retractable awning and heat reducing film on the SW windows, this has cut down considerably on the afternoon heat from the sun. Therefore, the house never gets above 80 even when we get a heat wave, and most days stays in the 70s. In addition the air is dry in summer, not humid. So the load on the A/C would not be as heavy as in many climates or home. Your suggestions sound right on. We were happy with the HVAC company that installed our furnace - he did discuss options with us but considering it rarely goes below 50F here except at night in January, the furnace is more than adequate for our heating needs - and we did mention that we would be interested in adding A/C in the future so we wanted one compatible with a suitable system. We'll definitely contact him again for a quote on the A/C addition. Our furnace has a filter on the return grille right now, I assume that's not ideal for an A/C system and we might look into getting a filter box added under the furnace. Thanks so much for the "to do" list. I actually have a friend who is an architect, so that might help us out. It's a rowhouse, so it's not as though we can do any complicated curves or other designs on the structural walls. We want to do as much of the work ourselves as we can, but neither of us is willing to work with electricity. We're OK with plumbing, but given that the house was owner-rehabbed before and not done very well, I'd rather pay a professional to get it straight. We were hoping that we could move the tub into the house before the extension is built because we want a nice clawfoot, which will be impossible to get down the stairs. But all the interior design we can take care of. I'm an artist and have many plans for the interior.

You want to avoid applying a second coat of stain. It will cause adhesion issues. What you can do is add some of the stain to a oil base poly, then apply it. Another option is to use poly shade in a similar color. You can apply 2-3 coats of the poly shade to achieve your desired color. Poly shade is oil base. Contractor should have water popped the floor prior to applying the stain. The color would come out darker.

This is my bid for a 3 feet by 6 feet walnut edge grain butcher block: $595.35

The edges will be simple eased edges. I believe this quote is for 1 3/4 inch thick. 2" thick is proportionally more.

Truck shipping to from Ohio to NJ will cost $159.00 for a total $754.35. The wood top will arrive unfinished. I will have to do a light finish sanding with a 220 or 320 grit sandpaper and then oil or polyurethane all surfaces.

That works out to about 33 dollars a square foot.

I haven't asked for a price quote from Grothouse yet. But I plan to. I suspect that the price goes up significantly if there is a detailed ogee edge treatment and if it comes prefinished. The Grothous finish is supposed to be excellent. But now that I've seen the informative youtube video posted on GW I don't think I mind finishing the wood myself.

I don't have first-hand experience, but have heard of people who used John Boos company for wood counter-tops and butcher blocks. If you wander through their website, you can find pricing for various woods and thicknesses and sizes. You would then have to pay shipping and for a local carpenter to install, but it gives one "ballpark" estimate.

Hi Sue36, The price quote I provided above is for The Hardwood Lumber Co. in Ohio. I learned about them a few weeks ago on Gardenweb.

I haven't yet made a decision. But I am leaning toward The Hardware Lumber Co. My quote from Craft-art was closer to $1500. I'd also still, just for curiosity, like to get a quote from Grothouse and John Boos. My cabinets probably won't be installed until late May. So I have some time to decide.

Boy, francoise. We're remarkably similar. I'm planning a quote from them also, and my cabs will go in the end of May too. Are you doing an oak floor too? And Carrara on the perimeter? :)

Nina--on another thread his week, someone mentioned getting a local wood worker/cab maker to make a walnut top. She said it was cheap and the work was beautiful. I've got an email in to my cab maker to see if he can build one for me.

Hi Breezy, Yes, we are doing a red oak floor (oil finish to match the rest of our house). I've flipped back and forth between marble and soapstone for the perimeter counters. Each has its own concerns in terms of durability. I worry that the oiled soapstone is a bit too dark for the look I'm going for -- but I love it! My cabinets will be painted white.

Hi, I got a quote on John boos: 36 x 72 $1,600 delivered to NY; 2" Walnut, finished in oil, No edge. 1 1/2 was a lot less. Amounts available right on website. Got an estimate from Grotehouse, same size, ogee edge and bowed, 2600 ballpark (ouch!) Honed Granite with edge for same was 1300 at local granite store. good luck!!
