taking advantage?

Hi all,

I could do with some advice with this issue we are cuurently having. What do you do with a step daughter, thatÃ¯Â¿Â½s left college, spending all her time at her boyfriends and when she is home she does nothing. She supposed to be getting a job, but is wasting so must time and dragging her feet. Her boyfriend thinks its fine to spend all is money on her, which gives her even less motivation to get employment. SheÃ¯Â¿Â½s asked if her boyfriend can stay over, we have said no since they have only been together a few months and we are not comfortable with it. When we tell her now, she just ignores us and give attitude...

When she's working and has her own home she can do what she likes. In someone else's home, being supported by the someone else, they get to make the rules. If she doesn't like it, the solution is open to her.

Should not matter if this young adult is a stepfamily situation or a intact bio-family...the daughter is taking advantage of a free ride and should not be tolerated.

Sit down with Dad and come up with your game plan. After agreeing to what the plan is either Dad or as a unit you/Dad lay it out to the young lady. Being ignored and giving attitude does not cut it anymore. Dad must be firm on this point. No, the BF can not stay over, now or even months from now. You're not a hotel. It has nothing to do with how long she's known him and/or how serious they are. Does not matter. Your home, your rules. Little lady wants her cake and to eat it too. It must be made clear to her that if she wants a carefree no responsibility life, it is not going to happen in your home.

If BF seems to have plenty of money to spend, I have to assume he has a job. Perhaps the girl believes she will marry him and he'll just support her. Does not matter. If that's her plan, she can just move in with BF now. Yeah, not a great idea, but that part is her own choice to make.

The part that lays with Dad/you is drawing up the plan and rules that will be followed and goals reached in your home. If the girl wants to live in a bubble of 'love', she's welcome to it, but not in your home. The important part is that you and Dad stand united on the plan/goals as a part of remaining in your home. If you're not united, you have a whole new problem.

Looks lovely! My dds thought it would be such a great idea to get Daddy a hammock, no realizing the overhang can't support it. So now we have a stand that is IN MY WAY all the time! We don't have a large backyard and he hardly ever lies in it. One of the dds does when she visits which isn't often, since she lives several states away. Hey, Glenda, maybe you can sneak over there sometime when he's not home and give it a spin....

I did. I ordered all 70 sq feet of countertop from Home Depot. I got Witch Hazel which is typically $69/sq ft and I got it for $59/sq ft. Saved us approximately $700. The fine print at Home Depot indicated something like "save up to $400" but they applied the lower price to the whole order. We aren't quite ready for templating yet but the fabricator said to just call when we're ready...they didn't have a time frame on it at all. I love, love, love so many of the new Corian colors. We are just not "rock" people so when my hubby convinced me to look at Corian, I fell head over heels! Edited to add: I don't know if you're aware of it or not but you can order a larger sample directly from Corian. It's a 10x10 size and it really helped me decide. Ignore the guidelines about where to place tie backs for decorative purposes. You should hang the hook in the location that will best pull the curtain in the position you want it to be. Put the curtains up, pull them back with the tiebacks and make marks on the wall where the hooks need to be.

None of the things you mention are covered by a home warranty unless the damage is due to sudden catastrophic failure. Yes, if you have a sudden windstorm that damages the garage door, that would be covered. No it's an ongoing issue that was mentioned as a problem in the inspection report. No to asbestos removal at all under most warranties. It's excluded. If the leak under the sink was sudden and overnight, then possibly it might cover getting a plumber out to repair it, but after the $500 deductible, but the plumber's fee is probably less than that. If the leak has done enough damage, and it was sudden, then your homeowner's insurance would probably cover that. But, neither the warranty nor your homeowners will cover damage from a leak that's been ongoing. That's neglect to not have addressed it. The granite issue won't be covered by anyone, including the company that did the work because the home ownership has changed hands. The usual one year warranty on workmanship is only to the original owner. And sealing granite is a simple DIY job. The tile and sink issue just means it's time to plan a kitchen redo. It's NOT a risk of ingestion. Or, it shouldn't be, because you shouldn't prepare food on counters or in your sink. You should always use a cutting board or colander. Brown water in pipes just means you probably have rusted galvanized pipes and it's probably time to replace them. No warranty or insurance will cover that either. Part of owning a home is maintaining that home. It sounds as though this home has some age to it and was poorly maintained. It also sounds as though you are a first time homeowner with little DIY ability. The only way that you can remain having little DIY ability is to pay for contractors to come and fix the problems. That quickly gets expensive for all kinds of minor issues. You've got several issues though that should only be handled by professionals, and you should begin to budget to handle those issues immediately or several of them could become disastrously worse!

I'd have to agree with everyone else here. How old is she? I mean depending on her age I would give her some freedom but it is your house, not her house. Your rules and if she doesn't like it, too bad. Even if she was going to school or working, she should still contribute to the house in some way by cleaning, yardwork, etc. Why does the boyfriend need to sleepover anyways? I've always told my girls that even though nothing may be going on and they are in fact, just sleeping, it still doesn't look appropriate.
