Shabby chic and dark walls...can it be done (well)?

It's been a long time since I've posted here, but lurk often, so I know this is THE place to come for decorating advice. I'm working on my master bedroom. My inspiration picture is below. (Thanks houzz.com.)

The walls in my bedroom are a dark green, (BM paint, color matched to Behr's "painted turtle"). I do love the color DH chose for the room, but it's too dark for what I want, thus an accent wall would probably be a good compromise. Hey...I'm a newlywed, I still compromise....what can I say... ;)

Anyway, I'm thinking of painting the wall behind my bed a similiar soft off-white as is in the inspiration picture. One wall also has two sets of French doors leading outside that bring in lots of light.

I'm almost done making my headboard. The bedding is similiar to the inspiration picture, with more light-colored layers added in for our cooler New England nights. I have the perfect chandelier and lots of good accent pieces and I'm really excited to try to accomplish the look I want. Can I pull it off with those two other dark walls? Does anybody have pics of shabby chic and dark walls or is it too much of an oxymoron?

I'd love input...TIA!

writersblock and polly so glad you also feel the above bedding but with plain white curtains would be best. That's what I've been thinking also. The white tulle sounds lovely or maybe eyelet, or maybe dotted swiss. kms we considered the Target bedding . . . it would sure save me a few bucks. But DD just doesn't like it. She really knows what she likes! It's really interesting . . . I never had such opinions at her age. She really is an "old soul" and actually does her fair share of mothering me at times. polly we just adore beds with curved footboards!! We never even knew about them until we found the website I mentioned before (foreverpinkcottagechic.com) We actually wanted a twin bed but couldn't find one with that look . . . so we decided to get the full bed. Today we also decided we're going to get a crystal chandy to complete the look! It should be stunning since it is a south facing room and the rainbows will be incredible. We never had a ceiling fixture in that room so we'll have to run wires. I'm just not sure where to hang it. If we do it centered in the room close to the ceiling then the sun may not hit it. If we hang it too low it may bonk heads? I wonder if we should plan on hanging it over the vanity area on the window side of the room? Or if that really limits furniture placement then?

Love the pictures of your daughter's cottage. I especially like white slipcovers with floral pillows. She's made it modern and sophisticated. The exterior shot of the 341 Westgate house is gorgeous. Talk about curb appeal, wow that's nice landscaping. I don't recognize the inside of this house at all. White Carrera marble (I hope I'm getting that name right) looks so good with the shabby chic style. The only thing I'm not loving is the orange and brown rug in the living room, seems out of place to me. I love the house but 4 mill? yikes. On Oprah's website they say Rachel recently moved from a 4000 sq ft house to a 1700 sq ft beach house. I take it the Brentwood house up for sale is the 4000 sq ft house? This beach house is pretty too. I see Rachel has retained her petite figure! I think I'm getting all her houses mixed up. What happened to the Malibu house that was in her books and dvds? Real Estalker shows a different Malibu house than the one I'm familiar with. Did she sell the original Malibu house years ago, the one with the pool and rustic dark wood walls she painted white? Allison, are you saying that Rachel has moved into the $20,000 a month rental now? Is that "the beach house" they're referring to? Looks like Rachel is leaving a trail of white houses behind her, lol.

Susie - thank you! The doors are part of our new foyer/garage addition, and with the sidelights and transom it's a 10' x 10' entry. We stained them ourselves which was quite a job, and unfortunately the afternoon sun hits them pretty hard so we'll probably be spending a lot of time maintaining them, but I really like them. On a good night, you can see the moon through the transom. Allison, thank you so much. I was thinking it would be about 1 yard for each chair. Surprisingly, there were none listed on ebay. Guess I was hoping some people would want to make custom slips and sell the ones that came with the chairs, but it doesn't appear so. I love what I've seen of your style, and really admire how your casual and more formal furniture pieces work so well together. That's something I need to work on, since I like both. I can't wait to post pictures of other rooms soon and get advice for furniture placement and paint colors. Right now, almost all of the rooms have tools, drywall and flooring piled up in them, since we're just entering the finishing stage of the whole house remodel. I'm so looking forward to having my house back to normal and get to the fun stuff! I think I'll keep an eye on the Highgate table over the next week or so. It has such nice thick legs, and would make a nice coffee table. That will probably be my next post!

My email is crashed or I would give you a list of great sites for what you want to do. Favorite is FunkyJunk Interiors. If you go to her site there are many other links to find what you want to do. May take a while to get the right blog, but a fun time looking at all the creative redo so well done. They have weekly project themes on all and you can run a search. I too want to change out my mahogany metal curtain rods to a light aged look. Metal takes on spray paint well. Use a gray metal spray primer first. Then whatever color you want. Metal spays will be shiny, so a final spray of clear in your finish will tone down. If you want to age the pieces, do so before the final spray. Auto paint is another option and definitely a stronger coverage. But most spray paints off the shelf have become far better than once was. They seem to cover and go a long way than before. I have done my metal bed and it has held up great. The curtain rods are up for grabs since drapes will move across the top and not sure how well that will hold up. Here is a link for painting beds. Awwww. Sorry, I hadn't gotten any emails saying I had responses to this thread, so I didn't know so many people replied. I KNOW I checked the box, but it happens often with me for some reason.

Allison, thank you so much for that link. I love, love, love roughlinen.com and it gave me some good inspiration. I am really looking forward to working on this room. (BTW...I remember you, of course, from our anxiety-filled kitchen redo days in '04-'05. Your kitchen is one of my faves. I just finished my second kitchen since then. This time it was a new home. Me and kitchens...It's still a love-hate relationship) ;)

Natesgram, you'll have to give me until at least next weekend for pictures, since I won't be home until then. I need to correct myself. I shouldn't say I'm almost finished with the headboard. Really, to be more clear, I'm almost finished GATHERING the pieces I want. I've made a few driftwood-esque and aged pieces on my own that came out pretty good, but I'm aiming to make most of it from natural things we find. It sure does take a long time for driftwood to wash up. Could y'all start throwing pieces of wood into the Atlantic when the tide is right to have it wash up on our property, please? ;)

I will post updates as I go along, but it's definitely a sloow moving project
