Anyone here have ClimateSeal interior storm windows (or similar?)
Comments (2)I would be interested in interior storms, but my stops leave about a 1/4" of space--so would they be installed between the stops? Jlc, you have great windows, and I understand the problem--I'm afraid of heights so my storms are going to be hinged on the top--mine are all square, but could you hinge yours on one side?...See MoreConstructing interior storm windows
Comments (5)1/2" laminated glass will block a lot of noise but its expensive and dangerously heavy. There is little point in adding that much glass unless you are in an otherwise quiet masonry structure. I would just use acrylic. Its cheaper and lighter and blocks a lot of noise too. You can attach it with a magnetic strip to make it easy to remove. Your window frame will likely not handle that much weight so you will need to secure it to the studs under the frame. As for caulk, most of the acoustic sealants are nasty. I would just use silicone. The objective is to put as much mass between you and the noise source as possible. Take a look at the photos on www.soundproofwindows.com that might give you some ideas. Also, there is a lot of useful additional information on www.soundproofing.org. No, trucks do not HAVE to make anywhere near the noise they do....See MoreInterior storms for newer windows?
Comments (3)What material are your windows made out of? It's possible you have a poor install and the frames and/or sashes are bowed. If so, it may be possible to adjust them and add better insulation....See MoreNeed replacement windows, but afraid of losing storms. No insulation.
Comments (5)The only way to avoid noticeable glass loss is to go with sash kits or full frame. May want to concentrate on air sealing the casing on both sides, adding insulation won't help much when the walls are uninsulated. A nice storm and properly fitted sash kit would probably be more air tight than many inserts . Install sash kits can be tricky business especially in a house that old, and should be installed by someone experienced at installing them properly....See Moredieselman8
