beeping smoke alarm
Comments (3)most bombs continue to beep even if you remove the power, did you cut the blue wire instead of the red one? I am so sorry to hear of your fate... Ok here is the scoop.. most hardwired smoke alarms have a battery backup that is not replaceable without replacing the unit. I had one that the contacts to the battery which was a disk style battery like a large watch battery had dust contamination and I took the detector apart and cleaned the contacts with alcohol and put it back together, no more beeping and it worked after reinstalling it, simply amazing! I do NOT recommend this and would not do it again thinking back about what if I had a fire and was asleep and it did not work. I just gave the low down that some have batteries and how I know. buy a new unit and replace it. THEN take it apart and see whats in there!...See MoreSmoke Detector hard wired, no battery!
Comments (8)lol. Interestingly enough if he were going to remove just one wire, I would have removed the black one... Either way, it's not a bomb. It is, however, a hazard to have ANY live wires "sticking out" or otherwise not properly "ended". If you choose to get rid of the hardwired smoke detector altogether, "cap" the wires with "wire nuts" and put a blank round plate over the hole (you can buy the plate at almost any hardware store. Don't try to make one yourself. Same with wirenuts.) Installing a new hardwired one is similarly simple. Match black to black, white to white, attach with wires, and secure it to the wall/ceiling per the instructions (usually two screws). I haven't seen a smoke detector with a ground wire since the early 80s, but if you somehow manage to find one, it'll have a green wire that needs to be connected to the bare copper wire in the wall/ceiling, also with a wirenut. No matter which option you choose, you'll want to turn off the power before mucking around with them wires. Since you probably have no reliable way to TEST them, I'd recommend turning off the power to the entire house....See MoreSmoke detector chirping problem even with no power
Comments (10)I agree with Bossy. Once one starts, you might as well just do them all. It will save the time finding which one it is and the others will start going in a week anyhow. The one time I had a hell of a time finding the thing that was chirping was that there was on the floor a "water detector" and that thing had a battery that was going as well....See More10 year smoke and CO detectors
Comments (14)Well, with a tenant situation, landlords generally use the 6 month battery replacement as the timing to do a walk through the house checking for issues. The tenants do not maintain them, we do. I will still do the review every 6 months, but many times I would find the tenants had removed the battery. They find it easier to disable the smoke alarm than deal with it when they burn dinner. The ten year alarms are sealed units, no battery replacement. I just wondered (after we had already installed them) if they were as easy and effective as they would appear....See Morehendricus
