Where to install smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors?
Comments (26)David - Effective 1 Jan 2011, CO detectors are required in new construction in NC. 2009 NC Residential Code R313 Carbon Monoxide Alarms. (090609 Item B-11) R313.1.1 Carbon monoxide alarms. In new construction, dwelling units shall be provided with an approved carbon monoxide alarm installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom(s) as directed by the alarm manufacturer. R313.1.2 Where required - existing dwellings. In existing dwellings, where interior alterations, repairs, fuel-fired appliance replacements, or additions requiring a permit occurs, or where one or more sleeping rooms are added or created, carbon monoxide alarms shall be provided in accordance with Section 313.1.1. R313.1.3 Alarm requirements. The required carbon monoxide alarms shall be audible in all bedrooms over background noise levels with all intervening doors closed. Single station carbon monoxide alarms shall be listed as complying with UL 2034 and shall be installed in accordance with this code and the manufacturer's installation instructions....See Moresmoke alarms chirp when I use small kitchen appliances
Comments (11)Hmmm I can't remember where I read it - originally I thought it was in the BC electrical code (I'm in Canada but the regs are mostly the same) but a quick glance there says "may be supplied with any general lighting circuit or plug outlet (except those circuits which are GFI protected or which supply kitchen plug outlets, laundry or outdoor plug outlets." It also says they must not be switchable apart from the breaker itself, of course. So I'm not sure where I heard of it, sorry (although it makes sense to me) - I may have even heard it from an electrician on a jobsite, but I don't recall. It could be part of an overall Canadian code, they are moving towards a single unified code and my BC book is a year or two old now - I'll try and find more. What I've read so far seems evenly divided by opinion but nothing by regulation. Some argue dedicated so nothing accidentally trips the breaker, others say shared so you know if the circuit is out. Of course the ones sold now tend (if not all?) to have battery backup, right?...See MoreSmoke detectors question
Comments (18)I have a similar question....... One of our detectors in our new house (been here exactly 1 yr) is 20 ft up in our 2-story foyer! How in the world will I ever get that battery changed??? I complained to the builder who said that it couldn't be right outside the master bedroom's door--where it should be--because of the air exchange being in that location (small foyer-like area to the bedroom door) but that it still had to be close by (so it's 20' up?). Anyway, anyone know if there's a hard-wired smoke detector available that doesn't require batteries? thanks!...See MoreSump Alarm Chirping, Even with New Battery
Comments (2)Sounds like a plausible explanation, Steve. I finally got hold of the manufacturer but they told me to call the local contractor (not sure they're even still in business). I can't live with the chirping since in my small house that chirping echoes from stem to stern upstairs and down. I have it plugged in, so it's working - just not if there's a power failure. (PS I only bought one set of batteries - the others I had - which is why I was thinking they might not be up to snuff!) Thanks for the input!...See Morebossyvossy
