Good Vinyl Replacement Windows

Hi - I'm looking to replace all windows in my house in Central Connecticut. I am planning to do vinyl replacement windows. We have approximately 15 double-hung windows, 2 picture windows and one casement. What would you recommend for a good mid-range window and how much should I expect to spend? Thanks.

katie, that is a VERY open-ended question. The price you can expect to pay can very significantly based on size, option content, installation circumstances, business model of the installation company, etc. We would need significantly more info to comment more specifically on what is or is not a fair price. What I can say, is that for a very broad range of pricing on a good product from a reputable company, you could be in the $400's on the very low end, up to knocking on the door of $1000 if you have a Cadillac option package and complex install. The most highly regarded vinyl lines frequently mentioned are HiMark, Sunrise, Softlite, Okna, Polaris. They all have a "good, better, best" product lineup as well.

Even though gorell is owned by soft lite, I would still take a look. They made some nice changes and its solid.

Has anyone heard of Kasson and Keller that make Eco Shield 4000? It is very hard to find a review on these windows. I like the DSL (divided simulated light grids), the price is nice too.

OK, I have a quotation. This is for Soft-Lite Imperial LS, double pane, low E argon, with superspacer. (I incorrectly thought they were Elements in a previous post.) 2 @ Window opening 48" X 40"; 2 casements per opening, so 4 windows total. 1 @ Window opening 97" X 52" picture window + 1 casement on either side (so 3 windows total) 1 @ Window opening 68" X 45" picture window + awning (tempered glass in awning) 2 @ window opening 68" X 45" picture window + awning (tempered glass in awning) These 2 windows are side-by-side (so 4 windows total). Full frame replacement, white exterior, woodgrain interior. Also interior wood trim stained to match and installed. Total came to $11,100. Seems a bit rich to me.

A company called Strong Windows. They sell and install Okna and Soft-lite. Robert an upstanding guy, and very knowledgeable. This company may not be the cheapest, but they know what they are doing. You could buy the best window in the universe, and if the contractor is not skilled at installation, the window will be bad. So it pays to have expert installation. A sash kit with Dual pane and low-E would have similar performance to a triple pane unit. The STC rating would be better and much less loss of glass over an insert. Installation can be simple to comlex depending on who is installing and the condition of the existing opening . I rarely see them installed correctly by pros unless they are somewhat specialized in these, the ones they got right were because the openings and window needed no modification.

Where in CT are you located? My sister-n-law just put in HiMarks in her home in Glastonbury.

I'm in West Hartford, so a Glastonbury reference would be great. I'm also considering Simonton 6500 from HD.

The other products mentioned earlier will offer superior performance to the Simonton option. Even if you do decide that you like that product, box stores have a revolving door of subs as installers since they pay less than the going rate. Playing with fire IMO.
If WoW or someone he knows is able to take care of you, you will be in good hands.
