I love the change of seasons, being a life-long Mainer, and I know I couldn't take your heat in TX. I HOPE that maybe you can find a state in between that you can agree would be wonderful - like MINE! Plenty of rocks to climb and lots of ocean and lakes. :-)

I don't know if I can get him out of Texas ... he loves the heat, the culture, the people, and NO SNOW (well, we get snow, but not the amount and length). He was so happy throwing away his snow shovel. :-D

Fun2BHere, I admit, I don't think I'd want to deal with it every winter, either!

charming place but I have to agree with him about snow..we're in Maryland and will retire in a few years to somewhere with no snow. The seasons are pretty though.

My3.....we were in Maine last year and fell in love...Camden, Bar Harbor....beautiful....just way too harsh a winter to consider retirement there (and probably expensive too).....keep telling DH to win the lottery so we can winter in FL and summer in Maine!

Miz_M...hopefully you will find a place you can both agree on....

Having lived in San Diego for 27 years, and in Austin for the last 5, would I ever go back to glorious weather, beautiful beaches, and almost year-round sunshine? Not on your life! I love the spaciousness, the country, people, price of gas/house pm't/groceries, and life in general. In my heart I longed for this sort of environment, and to top it off, 3 of my child renamed 1 grandchild have moved here. Thanks to my DD/DH for taking the job transfer he was offered or I might never have been able to experience life w/o hastle/hustle. I LOVE Texas, and I certainly understand why your fiancé wants to call this home.

Pattycakes, we love Austin, and are very seriously considering the area. We went down to Fredericksburg last year (he proposed on Enchanted Rock), and fell in love with the Hill Country. I've lived in Europe, and that's the feel I get there. :)

Well, I think ANY state would be lucky to have both of you. I don't know any other way, than snow and cold in winter, and prefer that any day overheat and humidity. Luckily, I work from home, so can just watch it pile up outside, and seldom HAVE to drive in it.

Besides, what's a little snow?? :-)

I have never been to Texas and would love to go to Austin and San Antonio and the south where the beach is. I hear Austin is just great....not sure I could take the heat though unless we are near the water with breezes.

Patty_Cakes---I grew up in So Cal and do miss it so much, but way too expensive to even think about going back. My best friend moved to Point Loma after high school so I used to go there all the time... lunches at the Coronado hotel...wonderful!

Joanie, my 3 favorite Texas beaches are:

Galveston (very historic city, amazing architecture)
Corpus Christi (nice, clean beaches, fun city)
North Padre Island National Seashore (they do turtle releases, and the beach is protected and undeveloped, unlike South Padre).

Snow in Texas? You must be in Dallas.

My mom married a guy born and raised in the Bronx. He moved down here and swears he'll never leave. He sure needed a few lessons in country living tho.

When they first married, mom had some acreage in Blanco. One morning she said they needed to do some brush clearing. He proceeds to get some matches and a gas can and starts walking down the hill in his bath robe and flip flops! Mom had to tell him that brush clearing required a little bit more preparation.

We live outside of Austin and talk about moving some where cooler and with more favorable politics all the time but I know that will never happen. This area will always be our home. Unless my son moves away - then all bets are off!

I'm a little west of Ft Worth, we always get a couple of snowfalls a winter, but they usually only last a few days or less. Ice can get really bad, though, and we can't get out of our driveway.

My late husband was from Iowa, and also said he'd never go back to that snow. I was up there a few winters, so I understood it!

Hmm. I'm sensing a pattern here of luring men to Texas from the North. :-D

The interior reminds me of my grandmothers house - as a child was fascinated by the latches!!

Mohonk Mountain House is my most favorite place to stay - so so so love the place, the preserve, and the area in general!!

Oh my goodness--my husband grew up in the town where that house is. His grandparents owned a stone farmhouse on acreage that looks so similar to the house you linked that I had to show him the picture to confirm that it wasn't their house! There are many gorgeous farmhouses and cottages in that same style in the area. There was a heavy
German and Dutch influence in that part of NY.

My3dogs, most everything has AC -- you aren't in the heat all day, and you don't have to shovel humidity! One of the TV stations here did weather ads that talked about the humidity keeping you skin from wrinkling and you looking younger. ;-)

Peegee, I'd really love to get married at the Mountain House! Fell in love with it (we hiked the Preserve, but stayed on LI.) I'll post a pic from that day, I sure miss it. :)

Texanjana, and I agree! Those Californian's need to look in an area where they can 'relate' a little more, maybe Plano? I've heard it called the OC of Texas. I'm out off the 290, which is becoming a major interstate known as the 290 corridor. In the last year, I would have so say traffic has almost doubled. As much as I love it, I'm already thinking about moving to Georgetown.

Mz_M, please check out Georgetown! It's on the square just like Fredricksberg, but about 45 minutes from Austin. Fredricksberg is 2+ hrs. away, depending on which side of the city you're going. I've been to Enchanted Rock also, It's gorgeous! DD/DH stayed in one of the small cabins for their anniversary a few years ago. It's so peaceful and the owners make you feel like part of their family. The Mr. Is an amazing talent. I would love to get back there, maybe in the fall. I would also advise making the move ASAP. Home prices are definitely on the upswing.

NOT to start a war, but am from Northern California (Marin County) by way of San Francisco (born and raised) and not moving anywhere! Maybe, NYC would tempt me.

Miz M, I just realized I was at Mohonk Mountain House this time last year! My sister lives in Northern NJ and we drove up for the day. Really beautiful resort.

As for the house in NY, take a look at the map - the NY Thruway is right behind it.

Mohonk is gorgeous. I would love to move up to that area. Just a bit too far for commuting to NNJ though. This is my SIgh ATM. I love the views. In warwick so doable commute. Been for sale for almost 3 years. You think they would take $400k? :)

I bet Texas is a nice change from NY MizM for your DF. Has he been to the home area lately. maybe if you take him on a vacation again to Mohonk he will remember what you all are missing in the North East. :)

California posters: I really want to visit your state, it's one of the few I haven't been to. So many areas I'd like to see! First thing I want to see are the giant Redwoods. :)

Kellyeng, beautiful picture! We hiked around all the grounds (I was hurting after The Lemon Squeeze, WOW!), but the plantings were different.

Graywings, good call on the picture! I kept thinking it looked familiar. :-D G noticed the Thruway, too, and didn't like that aspect of it.

Boopadadoo, that house and view are gorgeous! I can't believe the low price, for Jersey. We haven't been back to NY since G moved, but hopefully will in the near future (his BIL and SIL have an apt in Manhattan, can't wait to see it).

Texasjana, that is hilarious!!!! I just sold my house in Austin today and that is really great! We moved south of Austin to the hill country.

I totally understand as I would love to live somewhere that has seasons and is not sweltering most of the time. However, my husband is from Canada but a true Texas at heart and loves the heat. He would never leave Texas now.

That house is so cozy and has a ton of charm. I wish too!

I like older houses so this one tugs at my heartstrings a bit; i totally get it!

I will say though, that a lot of the surrounding areas are depressed. We have a woman who helps with the kids and cooks for us, and her daughter just bought a farmhouse up there. Very charming, nice barns, acreage, etc. But also backs up to Rt87, and, from what I hear, a lot of dilapidated farmhouses nearby.

Even New Paltz, which I remembered as cutesy, is a little shabby on the edges nowadays. Mohonk has such a gorgeous site, do the Smileys still run it and keep it dry? Last time I was there they'd added a nice spa but the food was still disappointing (and the carpets appeared to be ... original is the nicest word I can find for it!)

But apart from all that, you should be in a Mohonk commercial! Yowza, MizM

Mtnrdredux, interesting. I've only been through New Paltz once, we went straight to The Gunks and Preserve .... except for one quick stop in town, to shop at one of the climbing gear stores. I think I just want to live right in The Gunks, I'd never tire of exploring it!
