New interior Doors - paint or not

1st - Thank to all the members of the fantastic website. We started remodeling late last year and have now completely redone our kitchen and decks based on help here. See link below. It's been a lot of work (we are DIYers) but we are very happy with the results.

We are at the point now where we want to replace the interior doors (paint is peeling, they are really cheap etc.) and work on the other rooms.

My dilemma: I 'hate' to paint and doors always seem to need it the most. I love hardwood and am willing to put the time into finishing them correct. The problem is the moldings (floor and casements) I would prefer not to change all the painted floor molding. They were installed when we put in the floor a couple years ago. Will is look wrong if I leave the floor molding and go with real mahogany doors and casements? Or do I bite the bullet and paint doors.

WOW! What an awesome kitchen make over. It's absolutely beautiful. And wow all the detailing. Simply gorgeous.
As for your door dilemma I'd stain the doors. Does the door trim need to be replaced or are you thinking you have to with new doors?

Thanks on the kitchen. A lot of planning went into it. The kitchen forum on here provided lots of ideas!

As far as the interior doors go, they are not of the quality I would like and it's really not worth the time to try to repaint them. The jambs need work as well so I'm looking for prehung doors. The debate is do we go with a mahogany or cherry door or one that will be painted.

We found a great deal on solid wood (not solid "core") doors at a surplus place by us in northern MD. Paid $75 a piece for very solid, tall,thick, wide doors. I had to special order one elsewhere and the company swore to me it was solid wood - our order showed up as solid core, pre-primed (some sort of mdf material) and cost $150. It was not nearly as heavy and solid either. We have been checking the surplus place and our local salvage place for a replacement for that door every time we are there. It will not be staying in the house. So I would do a search for building surplus sales and architectural salvage places near you. It may take some time to find what you need, but you will certainly not find it at a Lowes or Home Depot type of place. You can't even buy a good door knob at a place like that anymore. They just don't make things like they used to. I guess most people are not interested in living in a home built with any care.

My doors were all sprayed by someone very experienced. They were removed (I don't see how else it could be done), all hardware removed, and they were set up in the empty garage (lots of plastic to protect things). They are perfectly smooth. I used Sherwin Williams paint in a satin finish (not oil).

Home Depot periodically (maybe quarterly) has free upgrades to solid core with Jen Weld. You can also find a larger selection of brands and better quality doors (not referring to JW, I don't know where they stand) at some lumber yards. This post was edited by snookums2 on Sat, May 4, 13 at 14:16

Your chandelier looks like the one grlwprls is looking for,
originally at Pottery Barn but discontinued now. I like it as well and your kitchen removation is beautiful.

We recently remodeled our kitchen and replaced all the ugly flat panel doors and builders grade trim. I wanted white my wood loving husband wanted stained..so we compromised.

Thanks for the answers salmon slayer. Since you'll be replacing the trim I'd go with paint grade door trim, painting them to match the baseboard.
I'm happy to see that Mary Beth posted pictures. I was going to do a search in hopes of finding a good example of stained doors with painted trim and she provided excellant examples. Beauitful doors too BM.
As for which wood to get the doors in I'd go with whichever matches your kitchen cabinet grain the best.

I remember doing the same search. Here is a couple more examples. The second photo is from jaymielo's home I tried to get the direct link but I can't find her anymore I hope she won't mind me posting a picture she had a great thread on painted trim and stained doors also.
