Pella windows

Has anyone had any issues with Pella windows regarding the glass? Our new Pellas have scratches, nics, residue that won't wash off,brown spots, and suction cup marks that show up when there is condensation or frost on the windows. Pella is dragging their feet.

I'm new to this webiste and don't know how to post a picture. Have you seen suction cup marks in glass before? It only shows when there is condensation on the windows on the outside or it we open a door and it frosts over.

@Ronnie Hossain Pella was sued and settled the case for Pella ProLine casement, awning, or transom window which were manufactured between January 1, 1991, and December 31, 2009 (“Pella ProLine Casement Window”) As @millworkman said, most issues people having is improper installation, and for every complaint, we address when it comes to newly installed windows or doors or anything else for that matter 90% of the issues are related to improper installation or flashing applications, etc. Not sure what happened in your case since you didn't say what issues you experienced yes some company representatives do try to point the arrows at the installers but most of the time they're right because not many follow the manufacturer's guidelines and not only when it comes to windows I see that with backer board installations, with composite decking installations, etc. That being said, I'm not defending Pella window manufacturer, I never used Pella and never suggested using them, just telling you based on my general experience... If you take the best product out there and you do not follow the manufacturer's minimum installation requirements there will be issues. Good luck

Rotting pella windows

Purchased a home in 2014. The windows were Pella proline aluminum clad/wood. the home was built in 1999, so at the tie of purchase, the house was approximately 15 years old. we received a $1500 write off for the 2 windows that were rotted at closing. the home inspector stated that the pella proline was probably one of the worst windows ever built. the class action suit closed in 2013 , so we could not take advantage of the settlement. we are now looking at a couple of other windows that have severe rot in the bottom rail. I have already replaced several of the cranking mechanisms. My question is , is there a none Pella version of the sash that I could have installed ? the frames are (to my surprise) in fairly good shape. A sash replacement is more cost effective this point in our lives. we are both retired and on fixed incomes. Thanks Art and Helen

@jft1314 - as you can see from my photo above, my windows were beyond repair, so I had to replace. I wonder though if for you the repairing might be a “penny wise pound foolish” choice. Because by repairing, you likely are not fixing the underlying Pella manufacturing issue. I’d be afraid the rot will show up again in a year or two, maybe in a different spot. It’s a gamble. But if the rot does show up later after you’ve repaired, then your money you spent on the repair was a waste. Is it just your sliding glass door that is having the problem, or all your windows? If just the sliding glass door, why not get some bids on a new one (not Pella; look at Andersen, Marvin or Kolbe if you want to stay with wood-clad). Then see if the cost of the repair and the potential future risk, plus the aggravation and stress, is that much of a better deal than replacement.

I have seen others asking the same questions and had the same thing happen I have a sliding door that rarely gets any direct sun through it. But, when we had some work done on the deck and the deck boards were removed, the light did come through the glass door and I was surprised that it cast a green glow into the room. This is an Anderson door. I have heard others complain that the greenish glow altered the appearance of the color in the room. Still, your house looks fine.

Are these with slimshades between the panes? If they are take the front pane out and clean all the glass panes. If they aren't and the glass is a sealed thermopane then you got problems.

It appears to be condensation on the exterior which may be caused by several variables. Dew point, a swimming pool near, a water garden near the units, etc.

Is it on the exterior?

It isn't the condensation that I am concerned about. The condensation is on the outside of the windows due to weather. What I am concerned about are the suction cup marks. I've been told this is considered a defect in the glass if they don't wash off. The suction cup marks do NOT wash off. I also have numerous scratches and nics in the glass as well as a reside that will not wash off. Our first set of sashes were declared defective by a Pella service tech, these are the second set. Now we are being told different things by different Pella people, the first service tech said the second set is also defective but he no longer works for the company. Now the service people don't want to come right out say it is a defect but they aren't saying it isn't. We are concerned that in a few years they might show even when there isn't condensation. This issue has been going on for almost 2 years with no resolution. There are fine lines that look almost like spider webs in the glass that can only be seen on bright sunny days. Since the weather has been wintery and not much sunshine it is difficult for the techs to see what I am talking about but on a bright sunny day the windows look horrible.

If you have any knowledge about the suction cup marks or the "spider web" type of marks in the glass I would like to have an opinion.

The cup marks are made by the suction cup tool we use to lift the glass with. Sometimes they are left on the inside of the glass and can't be removed. In most cases they are on the exterior side of the glass and require something a bit stronger than soap & water to remove. I use Goof-Off on glass where I see these marks. This will usually remove any film or visible marks from the glass. You have to be very careful when using this not to get it on the paint or finished product. If you can't get it off the glass with this then the marks are probably inside the glass. You'll just have to keep calling and requesting service for the glass. I know they're short handed in some areas and have issues with timely responses. Hope you get it resolved soon. Good Luck!!!

Thank you for your response. It is consistent with what I have been told but I didn't know to try Goof off. It doesn't solve our problems with the nics and scratches but at least maybe I'll feel better if I know those circles aren't going to show up in the glass in the future. I think 8 months of dealing with this is long enough though. I think they need a new glass supplier!
