2 Pella problems need help
Comments (20)Over the past nine years I have purchased and paid for installation of 26 Pell Designer series windows and a patio door. I was replacing Rockwell windows which had rotted, warped, leaked and were clouded between the glass. The windows I purchased from Pella are aluminum clad outside and wood trim inside - all casements. I purchased the Pella rol-screens when available and mini blinds between the glass, also when available. But here are the significant problems. Yesterday I discovered the interior wood trim on the portion of the window that cranks out is peeling off. On a guest bedroom window that is used rarely I discovered the trim is completely off. That caused me to inspect the other windows and discovered 16 windows in total are peeling from 2 inch to 8 inches starting from the top and working down. Some of these windows have been in as briefly as 5 years, some up to 9 years. This is the final straw in a series of disappointments. The first disappointment was cosmetic - the realization that I could not get the mini blinds on all sizes. So the cohesive, clean, contemporary look I was striving for is unattainable. The second was quality - 22 of the windows have blinds. The blinds are poorly constructed - some of them do not drop all the way to the bottom of the window - this appears to be a matter of mismatched tolerances, a manufacturing problem. About half of them have the protective piece installed over the string mechanism falling off, a materials/adhesive problem. Some of them have warped blinds, blinds that have never been outside the glass are distorted. On these "older" blinds, the strings are a hassle - they blow between the window and its frame and they tangle, and washing the window around the hooks provided to wrap the string is cumbersome. Which is the third frustration - when Pella introduced their new design without strings, they left all the earlier customers without an opportunity to upgrade. And I repeatedly asked for an upgrade plan. Finally I reached the phase of replacement where we were installing tall narrow windows, and then I discovered Pella doesn't offer true casements. The benefit of casements is that you can wash both sides from the inside - but not with Pella. Pella provides you a casement window with a butt hinge which means you are (I am) dragging out the ladder and buckets to wash these windows from the outside - and yes, blinds are not an option for these windows either. Oh, and to lock them requires multiple mechanisms. After being surprised when the first set of windows arrived with butt hinges, I waited four more years for Pella to get with the program. Finally I replaced the remaining nine windows with Andersen windows. Should have done that in the first place - the Andersen windows have a great strong hinge, open for ease of washing, have a single mechanism to lock the tall windows (vs multiple on the Pella), have more glass for light and view than the comparable Pella windows, and were clad by Andersen to match my existing investment in Pella. No, I am not employed by Andersen - I am just tired of being ripped off by supposedly credible companies like Pella. Pella got over $50K of my money and I got a series of problems and disappointments....See MoreTo Pella (Again) or Not to Pella?
Comments (3)I have also noticed many people bashing Pella, we install multiple lines of windows and Pella being one of them, that being said Pella is a great window. It is my belief that more than likely the people who are unhappy with Pella actually have installation issues, regardless of what they may say or who may have looked at the problems. Any wood window if not installed properly will begin to rot, if installed properly a wood frame window with a cladding on the outside will last for a lifetime when properly installed and maintained...See MorePella window problems
Comments (7)We also made the Fatal decision to purchase Pella windows. We would like to give you an update. We are spending the 3rd summer homeless because of our fateful decision to purchase Pella Windows. Pella has sent to our home teams of men. The last team of 4 Pella employees was in our home in January 2011. At that time, that team told us that Pella would be glad to manufacture a 3rd set of 49 windows and have them installed by the end of February 2011. We agreed to this process. It is July 7, 2011 and we have not seen anything from Pella since January 2011. We installed the first set of 49 Pella Architect Series double hung douglas fir windows in October 2009, the second set in February 2010 and are awaiting the third set. As you can see from our first post, we paid in full for our window order in 2009 and have been sorry for that decision ever since! We posted a Youtube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8vYK2cy-9Y about our home and created a website at pelladecideforyourself.com. We hear from families on a nearly daily basis that are in our similar boat. Pella has proven, unfortunately, to hundreds of families that we know of, to be a company that does not stand behind their product. As a Christian family, we are extremely disappointed with Pella because they are located in a well known Christian Community. We have had to, after 3 summers, contact an attorney. We do not believe in law suits, but we are homeless, for no other reason than the fact that our brand new Pella Architect Series double hung douglas fir windows leak water/air/snow. Please make your window purchase from any other company than Pella. They are involved in a class action law suit involving their Pro Line Windows. It is obvious that they just cannot stand behind their product, as they have been cheating families for years. Comments (28)You know what is so great about my Pella at least my older Designer Series....YOU can remove the inner pane of glass.... case it gets fogged...and clean or fix or change out parts for the shades... I sure miss my Rollscreens... still wanna get them eventually we will install them ourselfs....like we did in our former home of over 40 yrs... I pass on any series but the Designer.... course you still have to do preventive maintenance on any door and window..... This money pit home we bought 3 yrs ago has fogged peeling windows... Double paned and seals have failed. thank goodness 2 widows are single paned....... We did find some used awnings that help a lot....and a used patio cover for the front deck..... I read some brochures on doors they all recomend some type of overhang the sun is so extreme and does so much damage. We replaced two basement tall window first year here.... they are unfortuntely not Pella.... but they work so far. The previous owner and builder ..put in thick panes of glass framed in plain old pine painted.... that did not open. It is a walkout basement with a view of the woods Poor Hubby put in two NEW 32 by 36 or so Dhung windows on top of each other. Worked but I hated them.... I just was trying to save money......so I had to tell him how I hated the look.. He finally agreed and we ordred a size that fit better ,tall ,like over or close to 6 foot tall... so now the view is cut in half....instead of fourths...LOL But I will live with it... cause it took( Craigs List looking ) over two years later to find tall casements used... but they might eventually go in a greenhouse. Hubby declared he was tired of installing windows.....this is our are this 3rd home... and prob last But he did 3 so far, himself... we had a guy install the 2 DH smaller ones in the kitchen ..we took tose two from the basement . does not look so great ,as the guy did not remove the window frame... . He just stuck the whole shebang 32 by 36 dH in the old junk peeling frames.. and covered the exposed wood with formed and aluminum he formed on the spot... We had him cover all the old peeling window frames. If I known I would later find nice Pellas I would have saved the money he charged for covering the old wooden frames.... LOL Since we are seniors... I can live with those... we still have not finished the interior on the 2 kitchen windows....Matter of fact we still gots lots of stuff in boxes from the move.....LOL first home 40 years.....too much stuff I have bought used and new pella designers from Craigs list, Habitat Restore stores etc. Most we had to drive hrs away to get.. but the savings were like 1/6 the price.... It took 3 years to find a bunch of them.....so I might live long enough to see them in this money pit house.... Just my long story.......See Morejdeday
