Any carpet experts out there?

I am going to replace carpet that came with the house we bought 12 years ago. It's on the stairs and upstairs in the bedrooms and the hallway. I was hoping hardwood would be underneath because the downstairs has hardwood, but I'm told it's painted linoleum underneath. The carpet that came with the house is a light color which I like but shows a lot of dirt, especially on the stairs. Should I make it a priority to go with a darker color so it won't show as much dirt, or do people know whether carpet sold today with Scotchgard makes it less likely to show dirt? Would a pattern be less likely to show less dirt? Is there anything I should look for in terms of fibers or material or anything?

I don't like the look of a frieze or berber. A salesman yesterday told me wool is cost prohibitive (i.e. $100/squre foot) I priced putting in wood however it's more than twice the cost of carpet. Thanks for any help.
