Curtain length for young boy's room??

I'm about to put up curtains in my 4 yo son's room. They are 84" in length and meant to go to the floor. I wanted to buy the shorter version meant to go just to the window sill, but they didn't have enough panels in stock. I figured I would shorten each panel easily enough. Now, however, as I am holding them up to start measuring, I think I really like the look of floor-length. Is that appropriate for a young boy's room? Is it too much? I know some people are concerned with young children pulling down on long curtains, but that's not really a concern of mine. I just don't want to make the room overly formal. I'd love so input here! Thanks!

Debbie, I ran into the same problem when DS was about that age (he'll be 24 y/o in a week). I ended up cutting them to just graze his window ledge. I do think that kids rooms, especially boys, look more appropriate when short.

jbrig -- love the pocket curtains, that's a good idea! You're right about tab tops, the curtains they currently have on their window are tab tops and they are a pain to deal with. I'm making new curtains for that window and I want to use rings. kdw72697 -- thank you! We got it organized like that because, with two twin beds in the room, there is not any space for a dresser! Our house is relatively small, I think their room is less than 10 x 10. They have their captain's beds drawers (4 drawers and one cabinet each) and the closet. I'll be back, sometime in the future, to ask about what to do above their headboard areas (the bed don't have headboards really). I would like to put in some shelving but my DH is wary of shelves above beds.

I recently redid my DS's rooms (he just went off to college). What we did was to work with a black and grey color scheme. It gave it a more sophisticated look, very masculine. For his dorm room we did more of a navy and white color scheme (his furniture there is all oak). Again with black accents (desk chair, stacking storage cubes, etc). He recently bought some posters to put up. I think a nice neutral wall works well for allowing you to personalize your room with artwork, posters, bedding, etc. The paint we used was Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter whioch I highly recommend. It looks fantastic with black furniture accents. And for his curtains, we used painter's dropcloths; very inexpensive with a coarse feel to it. You room would look nice with an area rug (perhaps a geometric print?) If you will be having friends hang out in your room and are a young man living at home (I assume), I'd also look into a mini fridge. And, as I told my own son, there is nothing more welcoming for friends (esp. of the female variety) than having a neat and tidy room that doesn't smell like a gym bag! I bought him a room deodorizor from Linens 'n Things that you just leave in a corner and it absorbs orders, yet doesn't emit a smell of it's own.

Thanks all! I will try moving the tie backs. They are actually pretty loose already, any looser and they wouldn't stay put. It's just the curtain fabric is kind of stiff, so it doesn't drape really well. I think I may have actually bought the Ikea cotton ones, maybe I should have bought the linen ones instead. AKtillery - wow, that's your old house? Gorgeous, no wonder your new one is coming out so great :)

Bright colors with lots of contrast are very good for developing eye coordination. Helping babies to focus etcetera. Primary colors are always good. Maybe paint the walls a cheerful yellow with bright red curtains and blue Linens Etc. I do know one young mother who painted her baby's room white with all black accessories. Her logic was that that was the highest contrast a person can get LOL.

I think it depends on the style of the drapes. I wish I saved the pic, but I saw an adorable nautical themed room where they did blue corduroy (with grommets) drapes tied back with rope. The room was pretty large as well, which might make a difference. My house has 3 guest/children's rooms. One room is large (14x17 or so) and would look great with drapes. The smallest bedroom might feel closed in.

My neighbor, who is a decorator, has full length panels in her young son's room. The fabric is a casual navy plaid, so it doesn't strike me as formal in the least. I would be more concerned about it being too feminine - but i think it is entirely dependent on the room, fabric, etc.

Hi there,
I was in this situation not long ago (my son is 4) I opted for the floor length and I regret it now and am in the process of shortening them. Simply he just keeps on pulling them down and has even bent the rods. Floor length looks better without a doubt but for the practicality of a young boys room I would put them shorter.

I have two boys in a room with floor length panels and everyone (including them) loves their room. I think the choice of fabric will determine whether it's "formal" or not.

I agree fabric choice and curtain style dictates whether the look is formal or informal.

As to practicality, it all depends on your son. If he's likely to yank on the curtains go shorter. If he will mainly leave them alone, go long or short.

Why not try them long and see how it goes. You can always shorten them later, but you can't make them longer!

I donÂt mind the look of short curtains myself, esp. in a kidÂs bedroom, and especially in a small room where furniture etc. is against the walls and it doesnÂt leave a lot of room for curtain stacking space. My kids like to play behind my long living room curtains. I did apron-length curtains in our guest room and my DDÂs room, and roman shades in my sonÂs room.
