Help With Porch Design, Please?

We're undergoing a much-needed remodeling of our house. Here it is in all its current awfulness (Warning! you may want to shield your eyes!)

We plan to extend the depth of the false porch that currently runs from the door to the dining room window side from 3 feet to 6 feet, just enough to put some chairs & a small table out there. We'll cap it in nice stone, and use field stones for new steps to the house.

But I'm not envisioning the porch design. DH wants to have steps all across the front of the porch, and forgo the need for a railing. Would that look unbalanced? Should we just have nice steps in front of the door? That would keep the design & focal point centered, and we could have a pretty wrought iron railing around the rest of the porch.

Anybody want to take a whack at this? Design-wise, I mean, not with a sledge hammer :)

Thanks very much for your suggestions.
